About this course

The Android Development Bootcamp is a brand new, up-to-date course providing the perfect introduction to the real-world Android concepts and skills required to be a successful Android developer in 2024. Whether you are a complete beginner or are coming from another language or platform, this course will go from setting up and installing Android Studio to building real apps that are useful and look great. You'll gain a deep understanding of the core important aspects of Android app development, and you will be taught by a fully qualified teacher who made a switch from a completely different career into being a Senior Android Engineer at a major UK company making apps for millions of users.

*Begin by gaining a foundation in XML and Java - move onto Kotlin, Fragments, RecyclerViews and much more*

This course won't patronise you, or have you copying along typing things you don't understand. No important concept will be glossed over or taken for granted; no, you will have that deep understanding that leads to mastery.

*A unique Android course that offers a fully integrated curriculum*

Many Android courses teach a few of the concepts in isolation. For example you may see a section on Java separate from the other "Android" sections. But this isn't how Android works! Android/Java/XML are all so heavily intertwined, with our skills developing in all areas as we gain mastery, so why experience them in isolation?

In this course, you will learn what you need to know, the moment you need to know it! Whether it's working with layout files, programming in Java, you can be sure the key concepts - from Variables, Classes and Methods through to Inheritance, Interfaces and much more - will be introduced at the moment they are relevant, fitting in seamlessly with the rest of the course.

About me

I am currently employed as a Lead Android Engineer for a major UK company, born and currently living in the north of England, however programming was not where I started my career.

With a successful career behind me as a fully qualified music teacher and professional musician, I made the switch from teaching to software development, teaching myself. I am the proof that you don't need a computer science degree, or years of commercial experience to be a highly successful Android developer.

What's more, as I have years of training in teaching, I am highly skilled at breaking down complex topics in ways that are easy to understand and engaging, and I am expert at developing a curriculum where the concepts are introduced in an enjoyable, flowing way, always building upon our existing skills while acquiring new ones.

So, as somebody who decided one day to break into Android app development just like you are at this point, and as a fully qualified teacher, I am uniquely positioned to guide you on your path to also becoming an Android developer, in a way that is fun, carefully designed, engaging, never patronising, and that will get you as excited as I was - and still am - about learning this wonderful skill!

About you (or, course requirements!)

This is the course for you if:

  • You want to make Android apps

  • You are interested in becoming an employed Android developer, a freelancer, launching your own projects, or just want to try your hand at making real mobile apps

  • You have no prior programming experience, or some but from a different language/platform

  • You want a course that teaches you the real tools Android developers and professionals use in the real world, in an integrated curriculum that will give you a deep understanding of all the key concepts an Android developer needs to know to have a successful career

With regards to what you need to be able to take this course, note the following two points:

  • Absolutely zero programming experience is required (although if you have some that's also fine!) - you will be taught everything you need to know from scratch

  • You need a computer, either PC (Windows) or a Mac, with an internet connection

android studio does not ask me the language, it already choose kotlin and there's no option to change it back

By far the best approach at teaching I've ever seen. He breaks it down in ways that are easy to absorb, which is important in the world of programming!

So far, so good, but there are some concepts that aren't updated like FindViewById, which we got a warning in the beggining of the section, but the videos weren't changed.

I loved the course. Taught in a very easy to understand method. Of course the abrupt end and not finishing the project was a bit frustrating. Can't wait for more!

No doubt the instructor has a lot of knowledge and he is good at sharing it but it's taking forever to finish the course and I guess some concepts have been removed from the course description as well. So, not sure whether to expect it or not. I will change the rating when the course is fully uploaded because thrice I had to start from scratch as it is taking too long to get the new content. Eager to learn from him but disappointed for not getting new content on a regular basis.

So far, I really like this course. Everything is explained just as detailed as I as a beginner can/must understand it

So far so good. I am having a wonderful experience on this course but I think some of its content needs to be updated.

I've enjoyed everything in the course so far and I'm looking forward to creating more complicated looking applications. It does however sadden/confuse me that despite the course labeled as a 2023 Bootcamp there seems to be a lot of outdated information. An example would be that we were instructed to add (implementation "androidx.cardview:cardview:1.0.0") to the build.gradle to get access to the cardview widget however today by default androidx.core is already added to the build file which gives access to the cardview. Another thing I wish would have been covered sooner was about source control. One of the main reasons I'm taking this course is to end up with android applications on my GitHub as proof of learning. I've figured it out myself but still would be a nice to learn sooner. Overall, it's a good bootcamp that is teaching the fundamentals of android development in a clear and concise way. ?

I had some experience in Android before, but I gave up at some point. Now I am trying again to get back into that world. I am kicking myself for not starting this course earlier - it's really good so far and very easy to follow.

Short, Crispy and Clear. Straight to the point and no waste of time. I have seen many instructor but I felt Vin Norman to be way better.

I must say that Vin did an excellent job of teaching the concepts within the course. The instructor's knowledge and teaching style were both outstanding, and the course was well-structured and easy to follow. Throughout the course, I found that the instructor took a comprehensive approach, breaking down complex topics into simple, easy-to-understand steps. The instructor's explanations were clear, concise, and always accompanied by practical examples, which helped me understand and apply the concepts better. Overall, I would highly recommend this Android Development course to anyone interested in learning how to build mobile applications. The course is packed with valuable information. I'm leaving a 5-star review as I had a great experience with this course, and I believe it can help anyone interested in Android Development. I'm happy to see that Vin has continued to add to this course and I'm looking forward to the additional sections.

So I have increased the rating. It is indeed mentioned that no prior knowledge of programming languages is required. Still, taking from the title I was expecting a "new to android" course and not a "new to software development course" explaining what an "if"-statement is. All in all, I feel that the most important concepts have been included. I would have loved it more compressed and separated from general software development fundamentals though. I was also missing one thing that I think is fundamental for app development. Making a rest call.

It is pretty good although the LogCat interface has changed as of 2023 using Android Studio. I recommend adding a file to account for the change in the interface
