What you will learn

Learn basic rigging and animation techniques in Spine

Rig your own 2D characters

Animate your 2D characters

Take your 2D animations and give them a 3D feel

Why take this course?

Animation brings games alive. We believe creating great animation requires not only powerful software, but a powerful workflow. Spine is dedicated to 2D animation, providing an efficient workflow both for creating amazing animation and for integrating it into your games.

WHAT IS SPINE?

Spine is an animation tool that focuses specifically on 2D animation for games. Spine aims to have an efficient, streamlined workflow, both for creating animations and for making use of those animations in games.

BENEFITS

Animation in Spine is done by attaching images to bones, then animating the bones. This is called skeletal or cutout animation and has numerous benefits over traditional, frame-by-frame animation:

  • Smaller size Traditional animation requires an image for each frame of animation. Spine animations store only the bone data, which is very small, allowing you to pack your game full of unique animations.
  • Art requirements Spine animations require much fewer art assets, freeing up time and money better spent on the game.
  • Smoothness Spine animations use interpolation so animation is always as smooth as the frame rate. Animations can be played in slow motion with no loss in quality.
  • Attachments Images attached to bones can be swapped to outfit a character with different items and effects. Animations can be reused for characters that look different, saving countless hours.
  • Mixing Animations can be blended together. For example, a character could play a shoot animation while also playing a walk, run or swim animation. Changing from one animation to another can be smoothly crossfaded.
  • Procedural animation Bones can be manipulated through code, allowing for effects like shooting toward the mouse position, looking toward nearby enemies, or leaning forward when running up hill.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?

This course will take you step by step how to get the most out of your character by implementing basic and advance rigging techniques which will give you more animation functionality. You will learn proper ways to add vertices to your meshes and allow you to give your 2D characters a 3D feel.

Easy to follow instructions for experienced and beginners. A full character rig is included with 6 different outfits for character customization. Take your game animations to the next level. Enroll today!

He explained things pretty well as he was showing / teaching how its done so you do get to learn from it, however there were parts where he got so off / couldn't figure out what was going on that the video jumpcuts to points where he figured it out and completed it so he goes back and has to explain what he did, so a bit mislead teaching and time wasted. In the end the course does teach you what it sets out to do but you do have to guess / observe on certain parts on the dimensional pass on section because of those cuts. Also at the end he offers to update the course for free, and desperately does at time of writing this, but that hasn't been the case.

Audio inconsistent level. Lacks detail that could easily have been included to help less experienced. Keeps saying "Go Ahead".. grr, but it is a useful series and is helpful

Some times the lecturer skips a step or two and can't understand how he ended up doing certain things. So I had to stop the video and figure out what's happening in order to continue the lecture.

I liked this course and it did help me achieve my goal of getting my head around Spine from a standing start. However, it could really do with more content: showing how to export animations, best practice for a walk or run cycle ect. Something that really annoyed me & is the main reason for 3 stars is that there is one video where binding bones in the head suddenly cuts out. This section then randomly appears again at the end of the video, although it ended up taking me some time to figure that out. It's obviously a sloppy editing error and one the instructor could easily correct and re-upload the content. It's quite annoying that when you have paid them money to access the content they do not feel it is incumbent on them to make sure it is all 100% clear and correct. Aside from that the dimensional pass stuff is good. The instructor obviously has expertise, but needs to make sure that the content doesnt have any glitches.

Hi! Overall I enjoyed your course and went through all videos. Spine 2D is an amazing tool and I decided to buy it before purchasing your tutorial. Thank you for uploading your content and sharing with us. From the middle of the course on the classes started to get a bit tedious because of all tweeking and twisting of bones, vertices and vast repetition of the same knowledge over and over. There was a big feeling for fast forwarding to the end of the video, but I kept waiting afraid that I skeept key informations about Spine. Suggestion: This course could have been way shorter if you introduce timelapses and record a simpler speech on top of the footage. This way you would have explained the same concepts without that much repetition. Another thing you could improve on the next videos is to use a better microphone and a pop filter to remove the distractions like your breath and the very loud pop sounds. Thank you again and keep improving your classes and don't forget the updates. Best wishes. Raoni

Being realistic one of those stars is for being what appears to be the only Spine course on the internet. That being said this *is* a worthwhile course, slowly taking you step by step through a lot of what the official Spine tutorials assume you should just understand without explanation. The downside is this is very specific/limited in it's scope - entirely focused on creating one idle animation with a psuedo-3D effect.

Subtitles are wrong, poor audio (at some points is to low at others is to high), there is an incomplete part when instructor explains binding, accent of instructor is unintelligible at some points.

Mesh and dimensional pass were great. Sound level is not good in some videos. Was expected to learn skin system. It will be great if added videos covering skin system.

The course was clear and concise, there were no steps that were left out of the process. The pacing was good and the explanations were detailed enough.

Great for a beginner. As others have said, the presentation isn't the greatest (audio levels can change even within a video) and it only focuses on one type of example/animation (Idle, not a whole lot of movement), it does a great job of explaining the basics of Spine and gets you up and running quickly.

Very good step-by-step instructions. However a bit boring, I wouldn't try to fully go through this entire course in one go. Plus, while it still stands it sucks that you have to pay for the key asset within the course. Makes it a lot more "down putting" to anyone who is just starting out. He does offer a discount for the asset within the store but it's still a hassle to spend more money on a course.

Wastes a lot of time, content could've been condensed into a very short duration. Focuses solely on the one specific example and never really shows any other example shapes you might want to rig. The amount of vertices used doesn't seem optimized. Very unprofessional, audio levels aren't the same every video and lots of annoying background and breathing noise, get a mic filter please. No lectures on specific topics, only one long drawn-out session without any editing.
