Understand the risk factors relevant to both conditions

Learn the best psychotherapeutic and interventions for recovery

Develop insights about resistance and support groups

Why take this course?

Master the four primary symptoms of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress) and Acute Stress disorders. That is, the tendency to re-experience the actual traumatic event through dreams, nightmares and unwanted recollections. The second symptom involves motives employed by sufferers to avoid anything that reminds them of the trauma. For example, certain sensory experiences such as smells, colors, sights, tastes or sounds that might trigger unpleasant memories. Third, a feeling of detachment from others and reduced responsiveness to on-going life events. Such detachment could entail dissociation, a loss of memory, feelings of derealization and depersonalization. Finally, sufferers may notice that their arousal levels are easily triggered as well as feelings of anxiety and even guilt for surviving the traumatic event. This hyper-alert state can encompass exaggerated startle responses as well as recurring sleep disturbances.

Learn about the various risk factors associated with the stress disorders.  That is, the characteristics of groups (such as Indigenous People, Hispanics, African Americans and women) that are more likely to suffer from the stress disorders. In addition, we'll cover the percentages in our population likely to suffer from PTSD and acute stress disorders in any given year.

Grasp the range of effective treatments available for reducing nightmares, daydreams, avoidance, numbing and on-going tension. See demonstrations of successful therapy methods that are videotaped as well as explanations of exposure treatments and psychotropic drug therapy. Finally, a review of key concepts and answers is available to test your memory.

General baseline information was good! Would have liked to see more on the integration/dissociation of body and mind within PTSD treatment (relaxation techniques (massage therapy, etc), breathwork, dance, exercise) as well as other sensory experience proven to help with PTSD. Additionally, would have liked to see more on how to manage/support someone becoming overwhelmed with flashbacks or other overwhelming symptoms while in the treatment process or in their day to day life. I think the courses are not appearing in the correct order as the resource documents appeared at the end.

I thought that this lecture was very informative but yet easy to understand by all audiences. I appreciate all the good examples and emphasis on the EDMR technique. Examples and relatable real life scenarios helped me to better grasp the given information and is definitely a good studying tool for your psych 341 course. Thank you professor Stohs!

I appreciate the use of examples and demonstrations to show what EMDR would be like for clients. The professor does a good job of teaching the material by speaking in terms that students will understand. I learned quite a bit from this course!

Dr. J, did a great job in her explanations, they were direct and easy to understand. The example she gave for PTSD helped in what to look for and ways one can help treat it. The only recommendation would be perhaps adding another example, and walking through it just as she did with the previous one. Overall, very informative and educational videos which served to better understand the subject at hand.

This is course is great. It goes into great detail about the disorder and the most effective techniques used in therapy to treat stress disorders like PTSD. I also like how Dr. J gives demonstrations to make the concept easier to understand. Although the speed is a bit slow, the course does have the option to speed up the video. Overall, it is great to have these video lectures, because anyone could go back to them whenever they want.

The course was useful and applicable to real life as well as very informative! However, the speaking is very slow. The great thing about online courses is that you can pause and go back when you want to check something, which is the reason most instructors talk very fast in online videos. This course however is very slow and though it is interesting and useful content it can be hard to keep focused because of it. It is also slightly distracting to see Dr. J on the power points. Overall however, the course was very informative and went into a lot of useful detail with great and helpful examples. The real life use of the EMDR was a very nice touch! Overall a great course!

I feel that the content is extremely useful and informative. It is often difficult for people to understand information provided through written formats (either online or in textbooks), but having someone tell you the information as seen in this course helps to make it more personal and internalize it. The real-world applications and exercises allowed me to take what I was learning beyond face value and understand it on a practical level.
