What you will learn

Identify and use the hook in your story, so readers will want to buy and read your book, from the first paragraph

Why take this course?

When you buy a book in a shop, you can open it to chapter one and start reading. If it doesn't grab you right away, you can put it straight back on the shelf.

If you buy an e-book online, you can look at the first few pages for free, and decide in exactly the same way, if you want to read the rest.

So as an author, how do you write the first few pages to ensure that the reader will buy your book?

You have to make them want to read the rest.

To do that, you have to hook them.

In this short course I will show you the techniques I have been teaching to authors for a decade. I will show you not just how, but why hooking works, so that you won't need a formula, you won't need a clever or original idea.

You'll know how to promise the reader exactly what they want, and never disappoint.

I've read countless articles and books about writing, attended writing workshops, etc., so I am careful about signing up for new courses; the content is often redundant. Not with Harry. He has a unique perspective, and he offers new (to me) ways of thinking about story hooks. Glad I bought the course, and I will probably buy at least two more of Harry's courses.

An ideal course would define terms, such as hook. Even if it is one that is generally known, defining it for the purpose of the course establishes a baseline of expected knowledge for the audience regardless of experience. Next, the course should be broken down into parts that afford the student to be able to digest a bit of information then apply it. Following that is an ability to build on what their knowledge in each new lesson with opportunity for practicum at each level. This type of inculcation provides the student with gates of development, progressing to a culminating holistic exercise that applies all concepts in a final application of the course material. The polished product of the course is a graduated hook author. So far, this course has provided several examples of hooks without breaking down the components of a hook and how to creatively write to that particular component and inevitably the hook itself at large.

As someone experienced in writing I wanted to further my skills. I chose this class as I knew it was a subject I needed to work on. The instructor gave me pointers that I could use immediately. The explanations were a little vague at first, but as I went through the lessons they became clearer. I am very glad I opted to take this course.

It’s a great reminder of what to aim for on the Hook. The tutor has explored it pretty thoroughly. Harry Dewulf is also a great speaker.

This is my first course with this instructor. To learn creative story hooks, you need to find a creative story hook teacher. I very much liked the integrations used in the lectures ...well done!

I find Mr. Dewulf so engaging I want to watch the lessons over again. I also get the sense that he is conveying much more than I get in the first watch. Love learning from this instructor!

Very thought provoking. I learned somethings I'll carry with me throughout my writing career. I recommend this course.

This course deals with how a writer can get a reader's attention in the first chapter of a book. It follows its own principals with an introduction that engages and leads into the other lessons. Each lesson builds on the previous one to develop a sense of how to draw readers in with the right ingredients in just the right amounts. The style is such that it makes you think and work out the answers for yourself which is much more valuable than providing answers that seem to satisfy but actually don't improve your own sense of story.
