One of the most amazing things about Procreate is the abundance of brushes available, and not just the ones that comes with the app, but the custom brushes from artists all over the world including those from me! There’s something to suit every style. A Procreate brush pack can even influence your work and push your creativity to new places. It’s super exciting and one of those must-have skills I recommend to all students! In this class, Specialty Brush Creation in Procreate, I will be further exploring the creation of brushes in Procreate, but these all have a twist!

You may think you have the best default Procreate brush for you, and you don’t need to figure out how to make new ones. Maybe that’s all good but learning how to take advantage of third-party brushes and the Procreate brush settings will really take your art up a notch.

This Procreate brush tutorial will look at the creating specialty brushes like outline brushes, scatter brushes, texture brushes, dual brushes and pattern brushes, and a couple of specialty surprise brushes. Being able to edit brush settings introduces even more opportunities. If you can customize a brush, you can make powerful changes to suit specific needs, as I have done in this class.

Intro to Specialty Brush Creation in Procreate

This short intro will give you an overview of the class.

Lesson 1: Overview, Objectives and Our First Brush

In this lesson, I will show you the objectives for class and explain why I am always creating brushes. I will walk you through creating the simplest brush of all and show you some of the variables I affect to create variations.

Lesson 2: Border Brush Customization

In this lesson, I will break down the complete process of creating your own custom border brushes. This video is about creating a simple border and I show you everything from creating the source file, to importing it into Procreate, and finally, adjusting settings. Knowing how to adjust brushes is very important in Procreate.

Lesson 3: Creating a Scatter Brush

In this lesson, I will explain the settings and sizing of the brushes to create a scatter brush, much like the Illustrator Scatter brushes. I will show you some of the key techniques I use and explain every step of the way. By the end of the lesson, you will have a couple of variations of scatter brushes, and you will know how to use most of the brushes in the accompanying download by duplicating the brush and simply replacing the shape.

Lesson 4: Two Methods for Texture Brushes

This is the lesson in which I teach you about creating two different texture brushes. One is created in the form of a ball and the other is made with a seamless tile. We are left with an obvious area that needs to be filled on this one and I show you how to fix that. I show you a bunch more adjustments for brushes as we work our way through this lesson.

Lesson 5: Specialty Repeating Leaf Brush

In this lesson, we will create an interesting specialty brush. This should get you thinking about other ways you can use this method! You will see me use several different techniques to create a repeating leaf for a flower stem or a fern. Throughout the process you learn much more about brushes.

Lesson 6: Making a Custom Dual Brush

Learning to create dual brushes will really broaden your perspective on creating and using custom brushes. We will create brushes that can be used for stems and leaves.

Lesson 7: Conclusion, Mockup and Next Steps

We will conclude everything in this lesson and we end with a chat about next steps.
