This is my first online course and first programming course ever! I am so impressed with how informative the video is. For someone like me who has no background of programming at all, and be able to finish the course, anyone can do it! There will be some errors along the way, just be persistent and going back and forth on the video, eventually something will click. Apart from that, John also is very swift on replying, assisting and supporting me along the way. Thank you!!!

If you've been anxious about learning Ruby on Rails because of its steep learning curve, or if you are disheartened by the rants of Rubyists to learn Ruby first before Rails, then John will show you that diving directly into RoR isn't too hard. Although you'll get overwhelmed every once in a while with terminologies and magic that the framework is known for, you'll eventually understand it after following John's course. So, this course pushes you from the ledge and teaches you how to fly.

Excellent overview of Rails. The instructor covers a lot of ground quickly, so there's little explanation of syntax and the mechanisms that make Rails work. But I walked away with a sense of what it is like to construct a Ruby on Rails app. I also was familiarized with lots of powerful tools that I hadn't used before (such as Cloud 9, Heroku, Bootstrap, Masonry, Devise, and many more).

I would say that this course is not for the beginner. John goes over a lot of information quickly and it is hard at times to keep up. However he does so to give you insight to what can be done with ROR. While the content is great, there are some lectures where code is not completely explained. I would recommend a ROR basic course first and then this one.

While I the publisher is good to hear and provides a good overview with a useful workflow and working examples I would highly recommend renaming the title to something like "bootstrapping basics with ruby" and make it chrystal clear that the example can not be used for adopting it to the own needs as it simply leaves out the fact that security is not adressed at any stage. Should you plan working with a users data pls. keep it mind that security is first and design follows functionality (meanin: Plan what you need upfront and make sure its secure before making it nice and shiny).
However, it was a great introduction and useful to me in some aspects but the lack of missing security and pointing that out (even if it could have been addressed with a very few lines as I know after other tutorials now) costs a shiny little star.

Probably one of the best tutorials I've seen. He explains everything really well. Highly recommend this course to anyone who is looking to get started with Ruby on Rails.

John Elder does a great job with this intro course. I would be really interested to see him come out with some more in depth/advanced courses. A lot of the later videos in the course have copy/paste code and it would be great to see expansion on that (which is beyond the scope of this course). If your interested or want to see what Ruby is capable of, this is a fantastic intro.
