Dive into a journey through well - known artworks and artists guided by the following themes:

- Power & Politics: How did rulers employ the gods,goddesses and heroes for purposes of representation?

- Love & Lust: How did the male gaze manifest in the mythological artworks? Is there such thing as heavenly love?

- Bacchanal: What role does the tradition of wine-drinking play for Renaissance academics?

After the introduction of selected characters we will analyze particular artworks in detail.

We focus on the Early Modern Period, such as Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism.

I was expecting a more thorough explanation of Greek mythology in Art, such as the whole pantheon of gods and symbols, but the instructor did a really good job explaining the main ideas of the most famous greek gods and how they were used in art, especially in painting. My only complaint is that I wish there was more content and downloadable materials.

As a student who didn't pursue history further but really loved it as a subject, this course was very informative and apt for my interests! It doesn't detail too much because that may lead to confusion to those not very well versed with the topics, but it does provide just enough information to help you understand the concepts better and keep the interest going!

Le sujet est bien abordé, d'une manière progressive et claire. L'auteur de ce cours parle posément, dans un vocabulaire riche (qui nécessite parfois l'utilisation d'un dictionnaire pour moi qui ne maîtrise par pleinement l'anglais). La présentation est très agréable et fluide.

I really enjoyed this course! It is graphically appealing and Karima speaks calm and clear which makes it easy to follow along. The content is comprehensive and a lot of important artworks are shown. I finally know now who is who in mythological depictions and the cultural concepts she talks about are also interesting. I recommend this course to anyone who enjoys art and thinking about concepts of society.
