Overall, I was surprised by how comprehensive this course ended up being, and as someone who has virtually no understanding of music history whatsoever, this course has truly enlightened me, and was absolutely what I'd hoped for. The only reason I'm giving it 4.5 stars rather than 5 is that I feel there is some room for improvement - some of the explanations felt a bit unorganized, and at times, a bit unprecise. I'm pretty sure a bit of additional prep work and/or editing would help with that. But considering how much my field of musical knowledge has been expanded with this first part alone, I can only recommend this course, and I am excited to continue with the second part!

There are so few good music history courses, I feel luck to have found this one. It gives some additional dimension and context while studying J's other Music Composition and Music Theory classes.

I'm an enjoyer of music and this makes me appreciate it all more. I'm halfway through and I'm compelled to keep going through it all.

Maybe this is for high schoolers, but it's quite basic. And he shouldn't cover history, philosophy etc. He doesn't really know these subjects (eg the Roman Empire ended in 476, not 1500). Update: Later sections get much better, the more focus on music history the better.

I would gladly take the next course on Music History. This one I found a lot of additional research was required to understand the time period better and some of the terms required more definition. There is also quite a bit of the time used by listening to examples that were generally, I thought, too lengthy. I didn't read enough before purchasing the course as I failed to notice that although it is called Complete History of Music, it stops around 1300 A.D. At the end of the course though I felt it was time well spent overall.

The course is very poorly documented. A quick perusal of a basic music history text would have greatly helped to avoid glaring errors and so much vagueness. Section 8 is quite improved compared to the first 7. A few hours reading a book on the subject and perusing a few Wikipedia article would help... Historical facts are easy to check in today's world, there is no excuse to get them wrong. I enjoy this author's Music Theory courses which I greatly recommend but this venture is clearly an error.

Great course. Mr Allen is a gifted instructor : he makes everything looks simple and entertaining. The course is a nice overview of the periode. Not to much detailed for an easy access.

I think Jason Allen spoke very well about the subject and supplied sung examples. The only real problem for me was that a lot of the early information couldn't have been recorded or written down because the technology wasn't there so I couldn't hear some of it and couldn't read some of it. Since I was a teenager I've heard Gregorian chants in church and I've often wondered how and why they sound a lot alike but can be different at the same time. The course has given me clues to finding the answers. That means I will do some researching and I enjoy researching especially when I've had pointers to what I'm looking for. Thank you very much, Jason. I'm looking forward to Part 2.

I'm not a music guy, and was looking to add depth to my general knowledge of medieval times. Actually learned a lot and the music was pretty good. Highly recommend the course!

Another great course by Jay Allen, who does make learning really fun and easy. If you want to learn about the History of Music, this is your course. It's a great learning experience. Period. There are a lot of great teachers on here. What Jay Allen really sets apart, is not only his vast knowledge, but his genuine love for music and teaching. He really seems to care for his students and what they take away from the courses, while some others seem more caring for what they get from their students (money).

This is a music history course that's entertaining and gives you the basics but could use more depth. There are some good examples, but the course could use more. I'd also like to learn more about how music theory evolved and get some lessons/exercises on how to play some of these pieces. Still, it's an interesting, breezy course. No quizzes or handouts. Felt like it was thrown together quickly.
