Why take this course?

Maths and video games go hand-in-hand. Video games are a practical, challenging, and fun way to sharpen your math skills. What's more, video games are like living math. From graphics and physics, to AI and movement, games are full of math.

Learn foundational math concepts relevant to game development. In the course we break it down and build it back up, block by block. For each skill you will start from an interesting real-world problem. You'll always understand why you're learning a concept, and feel motivated to solve the problem in hand. In the course you will learn:

  • How to write and solve equations relevant to game development.

  • Basic trigonometry the fun way, triangles, circles & stuff.

  • Enough vector math to make 2D and 3D games.

  • About imaginary & complex numbers, angles & quaternions.

The concepts learnt will help you create interesting scoring mechanics, have one object smoothly follow another, calculate the path of a projectile, target enemies using triangles and understand how random item drops work.

This course is the result of a successful Kickstarter, and consistent demand from our community of hundreds of thousands of students worldwide. There is a real need to improve math skills, not just for games, but for many areas of life. You'll be amazed how much more colourful the world looks as your math improves.

All the math you learn will be reinforced with quizzes. You'll write your own handwritten notes as you go, to help you remember your skills. We'll translate some of the math to pseudocode so you can see how it applies to C#, C++, Python and any other modern language.

Get plugged into our communities of amazing developers on Facebook (nearly 20k), in our own TA-curated Community (17k views/day), and our student chat group (10k live at any one time).

You will get full lifetime access for a single one-off fee. The creators are qualified and experienced coders and avid gamers, so are able to explain complex concepts clearly, as well as entertain along the way.

This course is a nice culmination of information of important topics and concepts, and it does teach you them. But it's a really big missed opportunity to represent things in engine. To really spend time on explaining where each of these individual concepts live in game engines, during gameplay, etc... with examples. As such it gets a bit boring for me personally and I find myself needing to find my own real world examples and applications to solidify knowledge. For example: Even for basic algebra something like a damage equation "Actual Damage = (Base Damage × Critical Hit Multiplier) − Defense" could have been used to explain basic algebra, or things we do every day in game development.

"FINALLY! A Math course that promises to be practical, in context with videogame creation, where math will be explained in a more practical way and not just in theory as it usually is. This will be good!" ...if only that was true. The main appeal of this course is, as stated above, that there would be a practical application related to game development, but so far there is no single lesson, if not maybe only at the very beginning, where such practical application is actually shown. The course falls into the trap of every other math related course I've ever seen, teaching math from a purely theoretical point of view and never showing the practical application in a real scenario, which is the main reason why many people finds it hard to learn. Wouldn't have been hard, for every segment of the course, having the teacher actually showing the usage of his teaching in a real project but nope, you don't get to see that. What you get is: "Hey, you can use this in a videogame", followed by, well... nothing, they never show you how to actually use that in a videogame. Totally missed chance here for something great and "innovative" in the math scene. Pretty frustrating so far, considering that the course promise to be "math for games" while in the end it's just "math, wanted to make games with it? Well forget it Idi**". Actually feels like fake advertisement on the course, trying to sell it to game developers and people who'd be interested into practical application of math in games, and then just providing the usual theoretical stuff you could probably find for free on youtube, making people that are actually interested in gamedev but are not so good in math yet, probably more confused and frustrated than before. As is, this course should be taken down of Udemy for scamming people with fake advertisement on things that it never delivers.

I have always been fascinated by video games and how they create immersive and realistic worlds. However, I also struggled with maths and felt like I was missing out on the essential skills to understand and create video games. That’s why I decided to enroll in the Math For Video Games course offered by the GameDev tv Team. This course has taught me the fundamentals of maths for video games in a very comprehensive way that no one ever could so far on which I can build further relevant knowledge. The course covers topics relevant for video game development but can also be applied in other areas of maths as well. The instructors are very knowledgeable and engaging, and explain the concepts with clear exercises but what I miss in the course are applied examples, which could help understand the concepts even better and where this can come in very handy. However, thanks to this course, I have gained a solid foundation in maths for video games and I feel more confident and prepared to tackle some more advanced and specialised topics of interest. I am more than grateful for the knowledge acquired than words can ever describe. This course has been a game-changer for me and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn or improve their maths skills for video game development or maths in general.

Hit or miss, some concepts are explained in great detail while others are brushed over. The teacher in the algebra section assumes the student has general knowledge in algebra and doesnt spend much time explaining how or why some things you can do. My biggest complaint is that there is no followup on the challenges! I got stuck and wasn’t sure if I had solved it correctly, and it really sucks that I don’t get to see the teacher solve the challenge so I know if I was on the right track or not

Very good course, it covered many topics that as a CS student, I already had an understanding of but either refreshed my memory or gave me a new perspective on their uses, as well as taught me plenty of new concepts that I had very little understanding about.

I have experience in programming, but my math is a bit weak in some areas. This course is helping me fill in the gaps in my knowledge.

So far I am very pleased, though we are still covering quite basic material. I look forward to seeing how the course shapes up as we move into more complex topics.

Very sloppy course. I have to rewatch lectures again and again just to understand what they are trying to tell me. The pacing is horrible too. The first section was very slow and hand holding even tho the instructor gets stopped by the second instructor because he keeps making mistakes, then on the second section the instructor goes over formulas fast sometimes assuming you already know what he's talking about without reinforcing any of the previous concepts. Worse course i ever bought. It literally makes me hate math more than before i started this course. And the little things i do learn, i have no clue how they would actually help me in a real world game development situation as there are no actual examples.

It helps me recall how the basics of algebra in order to master advanced engineering mathematics to become a 3D computer animation artist and visual effects artist.

some formulas such as powering decimals. The square is useful but when it comes to more complex decimals that aren't able to be drawn by hand accurately, it becomes a very surface level understanding of power decimals and I would like to know the actual formula for doing that

If this course came out when I were a high schooler, I could have gained a solid foundation and been good at math. But, since this course refers to math for games, I was expecting that there would be a mini-game project that uses all the mentioned theories. Will bookmark this course for my son and grandson <3

Too rushed in my opinion, the trainer is clearly proficient in what is talking, but i found the course to be difficult to follow at times because certain things were implied.

The course provides solid review and/or foundation for math concepts that range from Middle School to College Level Math. The detail is extensive and problems/quizzes are good to complete and follow along with.

This Math Course is probably one of the most solid ones out there, it has excelent explication, has cover the most important topics of Maths, and make you have a solid fundation about other areas or deepness of maths (like some formulas). An as a enthusiastic teenager of programming and videogames I can definitive recommend this course, I even have a whole folder covering all the topics though out the course. However you must consider that this course, as the name suggest, is not for math in code, it is rather for math for videogames, which is a totally different objetive that this course has.
