Why take this course?

If you’re interested in learning how to more effectively manage, create or contribute to a knowledge base or a Wiki than this course is for you. I designed it specifically for individuals who are first time knowledge base users wanting to learn these skills, but individuals who have been tasked with managing, maintaining and updating knowledge bases will also benefit from the course. No prior knowledge base experience is necessary - this course covers ALL the basics!

The lessons learned here can be applied to any knowledge base or wiki. The course, however, provide hands-on learning using Confluence (from Atlassian), which is a widely used knowledge base (and offers free version!).

We’ll cover fundamental aspects of knowledge bases, including planning, processes and features.

Planning includes

  • Understanding your audience and their needs

  • Determining what content you'll need to meet hose needs

  • Designing a structure to encourage browsing and support search

Processes includes

  • Content audits and how they help keep your content fresh

  • The importance of publication workflows to ensuring new content meets your standards

  • How to engage your audience to use and contribute to your knowledge base

Features includes

  • Learning how to develop and deploy templates to standardize content

  • The importance of labels and how they drive search and they automate some tasks

  • Why good titles and headers are critical to your success

Who should take this course

  • Knowledge base admins or managers - This will help round-out your knowledge and help build better experiences

  • Anyone who contributes to a knowledge base - Anyone adding information to a knowledge base will benefit from understanding these basics

  • Team managers - Managers will benefit by understanding how to structure their team's knowledge, reducing friction and speeding up work

  • Individuals using a knowledge base - Folks using a knowledge base will benefit by understanding how they're setup, and how to more easily find information.

  • Product managers - Product managers will benefit by being able to setup repositories for their engineering / development teams, as well as customer-facing groups

This course also includes hand-on activities, including documenting your knowledge base structure in LucidChart (a free tool for diagramming processes), and setting up a live knowledge base in Confluence (a free and widely used knowledge base!) so you can get some experience using these tools.

Hands-on activities include

  • Making and managing templates in Confluence

  • Using LucidChart to diagram your knowledge base structure

  • Creating that knowledge base structure in Confluence

  • Applying and maintaining labels in Confluence

  • Learning how a number of Confluence Macros work

The information is good, although I realized that I am probably not a beginner in the concepts. I am a beginner in LucidChart and Confluence though, so it was nice to see those applied to knowledge base creation. I have two issues. One, is that the PDF resources feel disconnected from the video content. The videos felt like a summary of the PDF, but I had to go read the PDF to get the details of the concepts. It would help to incorporate those resources into the video presentation, go over them with us, then have the PDFs available afterward because they are easier to skim and reference. Second issue is that the assignment "instructor versions" sometimes use Confluence tools that we haven't been introduced to. Further, one of those tools (Excerpts) seems like the Confluence version of something like modular authoring, which is not exactly a beginner thing. It would be helpful for the tutorials on these tools to be moved from the end of the course into the relevant section of the knowledge base process. Overall—despite perhaps not being the intended audience—this course took concepts that I already have a foundation in and introduced me to tools that I can use to implement those concepts.

Speaker is concise and does not use any fluff in the course. Repetition is used occasionally for a reminder of specific topics and the delivery of the material is very organized.

This course offered helpful principles for setting up and building out a knowledge base. Not only did it offer best practices, but it provided examples of these tools being applied. Thank you for these helpful resources.

Great content, very concise, and your course learnings can be put into action immediately. There's also specific resources for Confluence which is fantastic if that's what knowledge base you're working with. I wish more people would take this course!

Audio was very poor in videos where only the screen content was being shown. It was clear when the Course presenter was on screen

The lectures are well structured and made a lot of sense. The silent videos of actual work could use a voice-over to maintain student focus.

I appreciate the spirit of this course, but find the substance lacking. Although it's a beginner course, I feel like this isn't even a full course. The entire materials could be summarized in a bullet list or one-page PDF. There are no real best practices, no examples beyond the on-the-fly KB the instructor made mostly to show you how Confluence works. For example, the titles section tells you that titles should be clear. It offers no examples of a clear title versus an unclear title, or guidelines on how to properly use subheaders. Just states that the titles should be clear. The structure section mostly exists to tell you that you should have a structure. There are a lot of resources out there about KB structure and models, and maybe that content is more intermediate, but telling me "I need a structure" is not going to help me end up with a KB with a solid structure. Please, point me somewhere. There are some example templates, but they're very basic and again, there's no discussion about how long or short, how complex or simple, articles can be, whether to use screenshots and icons, etc. In a beginner course we don't expect deep dive, but so much content is just missing from this course. Thank you for your hard work, and I apologize for all the criticism, but I kind of feel like I was handed a sandwich without filling.

This was a fantastic course to learn about the fundamentals of creating a new knowledge base. It was also very useful for maintaining an existing knowledge base. The analogies at the start of each section were spot on and aided understanding of the concepts. Really excellent for beginners. Also useful for experienced knowledge managers as a refresher on these foundational knowledge base principles. I would highly recommend!

A very timely course for a discipline of knowledge management. The industries I have worked in (and are working for) generate knowledge on a daily basis. Who does what, and how the things they do relate to what we do, often remain hidden knowledge. This course unlocks the full potential of wikis and knowledge bases for any organization.

very good in explaining how to plan a knowledge base. Some Confluence basics. But only very few Lucidchart.
