What you will learn

Create characters that are fully integrated with their stories.

Why take this course?

"Kitless Character Creation" - conceive and develop characters without kits, tricks or gimmicks.

If you're writing a novel you already know that a novel needs characters.

  • But where do characters come from?
  • How do you invent characters that are compelling, convincing and realistic?
  • What sort of characters does your story need?

Kitless Character Creation is a set of tools and techniques wrapped around one big idea:

Characters are created at the same time as the story.

Once you've grasped the relationship between characters and story, and how they interact during the creative process, you will find it much easier to create and manage your characters, to recognize their purpose and role in the story, and you'll see much more easily how your characters affect your readers.

In this course, you will learn how to use this relationship, and how it relates to all the common features of creating and developing characters:

  • introducing new characters
  • describing what characters look like
  • describing what characters think and feel
  • how the reader should get to know your characters
  • the effect of narrative voice and point of view on characters

This course was just what I was looking for. It has given me the skills I need to create realistic characters, and I'm finishing feeling much more confident in my ability to do this!

I've completed several courses (and read many books) about characterisation and this course offers several unique and practical methods for writing characters which I really loved. It gives me permission to have no major kit/questionnaire completed (which I actually find very boring), and instead, almost use an organic, freewrite approach (which isn't easy for me, but I'm working on it). His chapters on Outer life and Inner life also offer new methods I've not come across before. Highly recommend you add this to your resources! Thanks, Harry!

Gifted instructor. He motivates and captivates when he speaks. In addition, you can tell that he speaks with wisdom when he tells you to keep characterization detail to a minimum for a first draft, since you are only getting to know your characters.

The class is informative and the teacher is engaging. I, personally, feel that there should have been more examples to help understand what the teacher was trying to convey. There were times he asked the student to do something that I wasn't clear on. But the class was worth it.

I am not a writer, I was looking to enhance my Cg short stories. I found it overall helpful even though most I do naturally. Overall I think this is a good introduction to writing.

This course was fun. I liked being challenged by someone else's exercises, as I have been self driven for a (long) while. It stretched my thinking to follow external direction. I took this right after finishing my first full manuscript, and I will use the framework provided here to improve my characters the second time through.

The course gets to the heart of why characters exist in a story and so helps you determine for each one what level of character development is required and what form it should take. It dismisses some common advice on how to develop characters with reasons why they will not help with reader entertainment and engagement, instead offering more useful techniques that will enrich the story.
