Why take this course?

This course is a step-by-step introduction to family history research. You will learn how to organize yourself for family history research, create a family tree, and find the relevant documents you will need and where to find them for FREE. Finally, we will examine family history-related documents to find family members from prior generations.

In this course, we will visit several free, online tools used to search for family records and I will show you how I use each site to perform family history research.

At the end of this course, students will know how to start their family history journey and be comfortable navigating various sites to find important information. Further, students will have a starting place for organization of all family materials collected, so that they more easily put together family trees and create printed family tree posters and banners.

A great course if you're just starting out. My only concern is the course is too directly focused on the US., otherwise a good starting point.

The course is pretty basic, with useful tools and techniques that are widely available online in an organized fashion. The Lecturer is easy to understand and follow.

Received basic genealogy information. It was a good introduction to the subject. However, it was too short. Could have been more comprehensive. Needed more time for note-taking. Otherwise, it was well organized and had a good presentation.

The class is Genealogy 101... This would be a great class for someone who has not yet begun researching. Once you actively start researching, you come across most of the sites mentioned on your own. If you have no idea how to organize, this is a good rough outline on how to do so. Through the course of my research and data collection, I have reformatted my organization twice based on my needs. Bottom line, do what works best and makes the most sense to you. You, after all, are the one who needs to be able to retrieve the information. My only advice would be to document everything. You may think it's small, but I guarantee you'll come back to it when you find other missing pieces. All in all, if you are brand new, take this course. If you have even a small amount of experience, you may find this course to simplistic for your needs.
