Are you a music maker, performer, composer, or aspiring songwriter looking to up your game? This is the place to start.

Ear Training and Aural Skills is the practice of learning to play music by ear, learning to notate music by ear, and learning to understand music on a deeper level just by hearing it. In this class we are going to learn techniques for listening, analyzing, and notating music (writing it down) just by listening. Perfect Pitch is not required.

If you don't know me, I've published a lot of music theory classes here. Those classes have been really successful, and the number one request I've been getting from students is to make an Ear Training sequence of classes. So here it is! This series will have 6 parts:

  • Part 1: Rhythms

  • Part 2: Diatonic Intervals

  • Part 3: Melodies

  • Part 4: Diatonic Harmony

  • Part 5: Chromatic Melodies

  • Part 6: Chromatic Harmony

This class is the "Masterclass" Version, and it contains the complete parts 1, 2, and 3!

Each of these classes comes with about 4 hours of training, and a LOT of things to practice with. And of course, access to me with any questions you have at any time.

Here is a list of some of the topics we will cover:

I am watching the interval training section. So far, I watched videos number 94-105. And all of them were just introductory videos to get us prepared. There was no practice yet. I think all the information in these 11 videos could be said briefly in 5 minutes, instead of making it 11 videos.

I took ear training in college but was too ashamed to really try to understand because I was too busy trying to compare myself with other students who were more advanced than me. So I gave up. I did poorly but now that I am getting back into music, I find that I really like it. I wished that I could turn back the hands of time and ACTUALLY practice and apply all that I am learning and get a better grade in that class. I wish I never gave up but I'm really glad that I am learning the skill now. I just hope that I really master it and become the musician I believe myself to be. *I didn't give a complete star because sometimes the videos buffer or there is a lag.

I have audio engineering training but it's been a long time. Professor Allen is both informative as well as entertaining .

This course is just what I needed. I am an aspiring composer who struggles with brining what I hear or imagine to paper, and this class seems to be the exact fit for my needs.

Freaking incredible class! Jason Allen is an incredible teacher. I've gained so much already. I am already a working musician and this class has made my ear better and I'm only halfway there! Do the excercises! Put in the work and it will pay off! Take this class!

Jason, I am definitely in the 2nd camp. Until we did the tied notes in Section 6, I was going fine. I just felt that the next jump was just too big - I wouldn't have minded having some more practise before moving on to Section 7. Having just finished Section 7, it is with trepidation that I am moving on to Section 8. Hopefully, the graded sections do not have such a steep learning curve. I will go back and repeat the earlier sections, something that I have done with your music theory courses (and I have done most of them), as I find I pick up more each time I go through them. The challenge with all these on-line courses is having enough examples to practise on with each level. My suggestion would be you need 6-10 examples to work through for each concept, before you move onto the next one.
