What you will learn

Use R software for data import and export, data exploration and visualization, and for data analysis tasks, including performing a comprehensive set of data mining operations.

Effectively use a number of popular, contemporary data mining methods and techniques in demand by industry including: (1) Decision, classification and regression trees (CART); (2) Random forests; (3) Linear and logistic regression; and (4) Various cluster analysis techniques.

Apply the dozens of included "hands-on" cases and examples using real data and R scripts to new and unique data analysis and data mining problems.

Why take this course?

This is a "hands-on" business analytics, or data analytics course teaching how to use the popular, no-cost R software to perform dozens of data mining tasks using real data and data mining cases. It teaches critical data analysis, data mining, and predictive analytics skills, including data exploration, data visualization, and data mining skills using one of the most popular business analytics software suites used in industry and government today. The course is structured as a series of dozens of demonstrations of how to perform classification and predictive data mining tasks, including building classification trees, building and training decision trees, using random forests, linear modeling, regression, generalized linear modeling, logistic regression, and many different cluster analysis techniques. The course also trains and instructs on "best practices" for using R software, teaching and demonstrating how to install R software and RStudio, the characteristics of the basic data types and structures in R, as well as how to input data into an R session from the keyboard, from user prompts, or by importing files stored on a computer's hard drive. All software, slides, data, and R scripts that are performed in the dozens of case-based demonstration video lessons are included in the course materials so students can "take them home" and apply them to their own unique data analysis and mining cases. There are also "hands-on" exercises to perform in each course section to reinforce the learning process. The target audience for the course includes undergraduate and graduate students seeking to acquire employable data analytics skills, as well as practicing predictive analytics professionals seeking to expand their repertoire of data analysis and data mining knowledge and capabilities.

Course is good. It is taught by university professor, so you will have to do some additional reading and research. I take it as a plus as any knowledge which was not spoon-fed sticks for longer. However data mining part basically stops on Section 6 or 7. From than on it is just cluster analysis over and over.

Thanks yo Geoffrey, I have made great progress in learning this class. However, since I am a beginner in data mining and machine learning, there is a lot of knowledge that I have no idea theoretically. I hope more theory would be elaborated instead of assuming the learner is advanced in this knowledge.

Thanks, Dr. Hubuna...just to let you know you transformed my life. I am a student of yours from Georgia R school days.

It's such a great course for a novice, but a little slow paced as the instructor makes lots of long pauses to think.

I am still at 2% of the course, explanation is easy, hands on , will review the course after completing it

While the tools, topics and use cases being covered are valuable and useful, the course needs rework in the videos and how the notions are explained so that they may be more easily understood. Most of the time I had to run the videos at least at 1.25x speed, even 2x as some of the dialogues had long pauses or they were off-topic. I very often found myself looking at a static image, listening to the speaker and trying to imagine what is being meant. Also there where many situations where I didn't get why some interpretations are in a certain way (ex: why is an algorithm preferred, whose graph line is above the others?).

The course was really good. As an R user I liked the fact that the course covered concepts that somewhat reinforced my R knowledge and yet introduced me to new methods (and packages). One can actually go from "beginner to advanced" if they follow this course diligently. Great course.

It's introductory and covers too much basics. I expected more advanced topics. It seems that the authors copied lots materials from somewhere else.

The R code provided is very useful. However, the instructor does not appear to know much about the data that he's using for the examples, and he also seems to be occasionally surprised by the content of his slides. I also question how much of this course was actually developed by him. Some of his examples have appeared verbatim on other stats sites; I get the impression that this course may be a patchwork of others' work. Also, this course is very much focused on the mechanics of doing the analyses, and there is very little time spent on theoretical explanations. The different elements of the code are not always explained, so it can be a bit difficult to apply the code to your own data/analyses. If you have a good stats background and just need to learn how to run your favorite analyses in R, this course is useful. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend this course.

good course. He explains sometimes a little too much about items that student may or may not understand.

Very thorough explanations. Loved the "homework" at the end of 2. Made me realize what I was skimming over :)

First, I finished R programing on Coursera, however it was a bit too rushed for me. This course has more steady approach, like it!

Totalmente recomendable si se quiere tener una buena base en técnica básicas de Data Mining por medio de R. Estoy deseando apuntarme en otro curso de Geoffrey con un grado de dificultad mayor. Lo complejo lo explica de manera sencilla.
