Hardy really makes the design process accessible - repeating fundamental steps from one course to another helps to reinforce your skills to apply to your own projects. After having completed a few courses, the teaching method I appreciate the most is seeing each titled method in it's entirity - with a running commentary throughout. Only occasionally are aspects adjusted off-screen between steps, and when done so they are explained in an easy to follow manner. Really glad I purchased these courses - life changing stuff!

Great course; I really enjoyed following along! The explanations of all the concepts were easy to digest and Hardy did an amazing job of giving pointers while emphasizing flexibility, adaptability, and creative freedom. As someone who is completely new to concept art and has always wanted to try it but was doubtful I would ever be able to figure out how to even get started, this course was exactly what I needed. It gave me the fundamentals, a good idea of what I need to practice and explore on my own, and passion and excitement to see what I'm capable of creating with the new tools I'm equipped with.

I kinda feel bad criticizing his fundamentals course now. He really knows how to place down values and maybe it's actually better to just build light values by adding brights onto a paint with low opacity. Amazing how fast things get done!

I would like to start by saying that I greatly respect Hardy Fowler's work on this site. I have several of his courses and he had taught me a lot of useful tricks and techniques in rendering already. This course is no different - except for one thing. But that one thing costs two stars at least, if not more. I had hoped he would teach practical ways to render fur, scales and feather... but I do not get the feeling he had done so. None of these four projects dealt with any of those more specialized textures, they only showed up briefly in past designs but he did not go into detail about them. Which is a damn shame in my opinion. Yes, I know - final polish, overlay textures, yes yes. I meant the actual painting process, for designs that require massive furs or feathers or scales that cannot be phonied in with some texture PNGs. Overall, it is a great course for many lessons, including the basics of character design - but it also drops the ball incredibly hard on a few very important key points that would be just as essential. This is his first course where I felt a shade of disappointment. But still I cherish the lessons I had received.

This is a fantastic course, really produced some of my best work following this course and improved my skills tenfold. I highly recommend doing Hardys other courses before tackling this one as it builds upon the sills you have learnt from those courses. If not especially do Hardys free courses to get you up to speed with some fundamentals. I have used the skills I have learnt from this course to create my own monsters and have really surprised myself.
