Learn hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering

Know theory, business apllication, sas program and interpretation of output

R syntax for clustering

Why take this course?

  1. About the course - Cluster analysis is one of the most popular techniques used in data mining for marketing needs. The idea behind cluster analysis is to find natural groups within data in such a way that each element in the group is as similar to each other as possible. At the same time, the groups are as dissimilar to other groups as possible.
  2. Course materials- The course contains video presentations (power point presentations with voice), pdf, excel work book and sas codes.
  3. Course duration- The course should take roughly 10 hours to understand and internalize the concepts.
  4. Course Structure (contents) The structure of the course is as follows.

Part 01 - cluster analysis theory and workout using SAS

------------------------------

Motivation

  • Where one applies cluster analysis. Why one should learn cluster analysis?
  • How it is different from objective segmentation (CHAID / CART )

Statistical foundation and practical application: Understand

  • Different type of cluster analysis
  • Cluster Analysis – high level view
  • Hierarchical clustering –
    • Agglomerative or Divisive technique
    • Dendogram – What it is? What does it show?
    • Scree plot - How to decide about number of clusters
    • How to use SAS command to run hierarchical clustering
    • When and why does on need to standardize the data?
    • How to understand and interpret the output
  • Non-hierarchical clustering (K means clustering).
    • Why do we need k means approach
    • How does it work?
    • How does it iterate?
    • How does it decide about combining old clusters?
    • How to use SAS command to run hierarchical clustering
    • When and why does on need to standardize the data?
    • How to understand and interpret the output

The speech is not clear, he should pronounce english a little bit better to make himself understandable

Old - Only the proc's are shown in SAS, the final example is all in R. I would have appreciated a final solution in both SAS and R. A very good course overall though - I really like how most of the math is also shown in Excel for understanding. Updated - Answer here! https://www.udemy.com/cluster-analysis-motivation-theory-practical-application/learn/v4/questions/2955254

This course has given me the basics of cluster analysis. The course covers cluster analysis really well. But I think this course can be improved by explaining more baout the syntax of various commands of R programming and SAS. This course assumes the student has knowledge of R programming and SAS.

The author has arranged the materials unsystematizedly by either repeating some of the content wordily or stopping half-way in most of his video explanation. Personally, I found the content very confusing despite watching his video for the second time. However, I did not find his teaching very stimulating because I have read about them mostly through books.

I really enjoyed Gopal's explanations of concepts within this course. I think he is really detailed in his explanation which allowed me to understand the concepts fully. However, one small improvement point I would like to mention is that sometimes he explains the concept several times in the same lecture and while that reinforces the learning, it can get repetitive and tedious. I would have also liked it if the course focused on one of the languages, not both R and SAS, which means that you can go into more detail with cluster analysis in that one single chosen language instead of switching between the two. Gopal, this is a really good course, I really enjoyed it and it has helped me at work - keep up the good work!

This is a brilliant course if somebody wants to learn cluster analysis end to end. Covers all the topics with detailed explanations which even a non-statistics person can understand. Excellent course material which you can go through post this course if you want to re-look or re-learn something or when in confusion. Awesome course!!

Wow, so I login to my Udemy account because I was looking for a course that I took and I happened to look in my dashboard that I was at 53% on progress in this course. I took this course more than 4 years ago and finished it, therefore Gopal has been updating the material.... And my inference was completely correct! The course has been updated for R in an industrial environment! Amazing! Thank you very much Gopal!

Thanks Gopal for the quick response. You have v well explained the nitty gritties of cluster analysis, different scenarios, case studies and your way of explaining the things in a very simple manner is really applaudable. Regards

It was a very straight forward course and the instructor covered the important topics well. I think he pointed out some good nuances as like the need to use k-means with large datasets versus hierarchical.

I am giving my reasons why I find this course excellent : 1)Content is very lucid 2)Excel and SAS both used for explaining the concepts of segmentation and interpretation of their output 3)It's a good mix of theoretical and practical application 4)A non-statistician can also perform clustering after going through this course with 100% accuracy My suggestion go for it ...a must for every beginner starting their career in analytics and refresher for those already in this field
