Why take this course?

What do TREES, SMOKE, MUSCLES and WAVES have to teach us about writing melodies?

A killer melody line can make a song (and a lame one can also break your song).  You know a great melody when you hear it, by maybe you're wondering WHY it works?

That's what we'll explore in this class, as we dive into songwriting/composition techniques to strengthen your music.

We'll approach this topic by looking at nature.  Nature is all around us, and it's literally us.  Our bodies are part of nature.  Therefore, we are instinctually attracted to works that have really strong similarities to nature.  Not literal similarities (i.e. a song about the ocean), but similarity in structure and anatomy.

Here's some of the things we'll cover in this class, that will help you when you are writing a song:

  • How patterns, and variations on patterns, are found in nature - and how that relates to music composition and songwriting.

  • What can we learn from smoke - and how that teaches about anticipation and surprise.  And how this can inform how much repetition you'll use when composing and writing a melody.

  • How tension and relaxation can create movement in your music - just like how it works in our bodies (with muscles).  There are a number of composition techniques in this, for how to work with tension (dissonance).

  • Adding complexity through overlapping melodic lines - similar to how waves overlap each other.  How composing with this in mind can add increased complexity and depth to your music.

Whether you're someone looking to get better at writing songs, or composing instrumental music, we are going to dive into the FUNDAMENTALS around music.  There will be plenty of songwriting techniques in there, but my main aim is to equip you with a better understanding for how these elements work.

Abs.

Definitely, the course is very helpful for song writing beginners without the burden of advanced music theory.

Incredible. As a beginner with good music instincts let's say (imo) these were the things you can feel, sometimes it feels right and even you can predict it. The lecture tough me to how to use the laws and movements of nature into my music. I hope my songs will feel "right" after I incorparate these lessons into them. Hope to have another interesting course by my teacher Jonathan soon. If you are reading this Jonathan, thanks for the interesting point of view. Maybe you can arrange a Zoom call from your students all over the word so that we can have interesting chats.

The connections illustrated do a good job at bridging concepts and strategies of execution, allowing for a more intuitive understanding. The use of smoke to illustrate turbulence can draw the connection to music was a nice touch

First, Jonathan (hope I've spelled that right) has provided a way of looking at composing that falls into my poetic view of music. Reaching for nature's inspiration resonates deeply. 2. He organized it for simple understanding. 3. His speech tempo and voice are well suited to the subject. 4. I resonate with every part of the course, including Yash's courage to have his efforts dissected. I'm inspired and will repeat this course often and seek out Jonathan's others.

it is fantastic how he approaches composition comparing the creation of God, natural phenomena, the dynamics of life, peace, turbulence ... Wonderful !!!

Definitely some helpful tips, but I feel the course is a bit short. It does show the teachers ability to be concise! Overall I really enjoyed it.

Use of metaphor was the course 'hook' for me. The music composition techniques were well explained. The course instructor avoided repetition on the fashion front by frequent changes of T shirt, sometimes accompanied by the counterpoint of a hoodie! Nice one!

This is a great course that includes a huge amount of useful information. I found every lesson engaging and interesting, and will likely refer back to many of these lessons as I move forward in my own practice. Thanks for a wonderful course!

Wow. At first I thought using Nature was a clever way for the instructor to characterize his teachings about melody. And it is -- the visual images stayed with me and fuel the concepts. During walks I'd listen on earbuds and got good tips. However, when I sat down and watched the videos and contemplated the ideas, I realized, THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! Skills I had intuitively are now tools that I can use consciously. And, the instructor's teaching style and presentation are well-planned and professional. I highly recommend this course and that you take time to sit with it, review it, and enjoy those a-ha moments!

Just in terms of production, it's one of the best I've seen on here. How he uses visual examples, and the delivery is crisp and moves at just the right pace. I never felt, at any time, that the material was dragging, or going too slow. Lots of songwriting techniques here that I will be able to apply right away.

The approach to this material is so unique. Really like how it's helping me think about how to write music. I'm not as familiar with music theory, so it's stretching me, but I'm able to get the basic ideas.
