What you will learn

Master seven important plot elements of commercially successful novels.

Plan new novels with plots that will keep readers engaged and turning pages.

Enhance your literary novels with plots that will make agents stop saying, "This story is a little too quiet for my list."

Why take this course?

Writing Fiction that Moves: Write page-turning novels by learning to write compelling plots!

In this course on plotting, you'll learn to write compelling short hooks for your query letters, and you'll learn how to plot a satisfying story that takes a character from point A to point B while keeping readers eagerly turning pages all the way.

If you're unpublished and having a hard time breaking in or if you're published but having a hard time breaking out, this course should help you.

You'll also be able to ask Sally questions in the course or on the companion Facebook page where she keeps office hours a couple of times a month.

Sally has over 3000 satisfied students on Udemy. Join those happy students by joining this course. (oh, OK, there are a couple of disgruntled folks in that lot--you can't please all the people all the time. Thank God for money-back guarantees!)

Is this course for you?

  • If you have been trying to figure out how some writers are able to come up with plots that hook readers and keep them turning pages, this course is for you.
  • If you’ve sold  your first book to publisher but you're not sure how you did it and your agent keeps kicking back the new books you’re sending her, then this course is for you.
  • If you are a literary novelist you will scoff at this course, but you may be the one to get the most out of it because literary novelists are often great at character and voice and mood, but a little less great at writing page-turning novels with compelling  plots.

But . . .

  • If you’ve already read The Hero’s Journey and if you understand the three-act structure and if you’ve read a lot of books on plot, this course may not be for you. Sally has put this course together as an answer to the submissions she sees that aren't working, so if you’ve been to a lot of classes already, her plot ideas here will probably not be new to you. They still might help you identify weakness you haven't previously noticed in your own manuscripts, though.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING about Sally's courses?

  • . . .  I found the instructor's examples easy to follow, and I felt very engaged with the subject. Great course!  ~Geoff, (Udemy student)
  • We had so many wonderful comments about you and your class on our evaluations. We hope you'll be able to join us again next summer. . . .  ~Lindy Jacobs (OCW Summer Conference Director)
  • Sally's comments were specific and very helpful. It is such a gift to have a professional agent share how my pitch would be received. Sally is an oasis on the long, dry journey from writer to published author. Go ahead give her a try. You won't be disappointed. ~Maureen (Fiverr customer)
  • Not like any course I've taken. Sally teaches in her own unique way and it works! At first, I was taken aback, but the wealth of information kept me moving through and I'm glad I did.  . . . ~Curtis (Udemy student)
  • Thank you for your incredible class. It was a valuable, valuable learning experience. . . . ~Kimberly (Women on Writing student)
  • Thank you so much. I got a lot out of the class and it gave me a lot to think about. I'm grateful for all the feedback. . . .   ~Christie (Women on Writing student)
  • Thank you so much for your feedback . . . throughout the course. I appreciated how much you know about this field and your willingness to share your expertise.  ~Sandy (Women on Writing student)
  • Here's the thing about Sally: she's going to be honest and direct with you. As a writer, that's EXACTLY what you want. Each time I've worked with her, Sally has quickly spotted my story's flaws -- and provided multiple suggestions to make it a stronger piece. Excellent, as always!  ~Barbie (Fiverr customer)
  • This course is packed with practical advice from a professional agent. She knows what she's talking about. I see, now, what to look for when editing my manuscript. The added bonus of her laugh out loud examples made the time fly by. If you are a serious writer of fiction, you will do yourself a favor and take this course. There is too much information do take in in one sitting.  ~Kathleen (Udemy student)

And because Sally likes to be fair and balanced . . .

  • While I'm sure this woman is a great writer and great editor, I, unfortunately, didn't find her to be a very good teacher. There was a lot of "look at this example of writing. See how crappy it is? Don't write crappy like this!" *insert slap on the wrist. But there was no depth. Nothing you couldn't learn in Creative Writing 101, which is possibly the point. ~ Britt (Udemy student)

And last, but not least, this gal who really hated one course so much that she left a half-star rating. She perhaps did not see the irony in her remark about the course, which was, simply

  • Too shallow.  -Mary (Udemy student)

Come on in if you dare. Step up. Invest in your dream. And in the end, if you hate the course, there is a 30-day, no-questions-asked, money-back guarantee. And all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things will be well.

What this course promises:

If you do all the exercises, you'll finish the course with a novel completely plotted. You'll also get a simple template to follow for writing your short hooks and you'll come away understanding what elements go into some of the most compelling plots. We'll cover:

  1. the normal life of the character
  2. the inciting incident
  3. the character's acceptance of the call to action
  4. the character trying and failing and trying and failing
  5. the dark night of the soul
  6. the climax
  7. the denouement

What this course does not promise:

  • that it will be fast and easy
  • that you will get a book contract at the end of the course
  • that you will actually write an interesting book (It depends on how hard you are willing to work at it)

Some questions this course answers:

  • What is one of the top reasons agents reject manuscripts?
  • How do I plot a commercial novel?
  • What are some plot elements that many bestselling novels have in common?
  • Where should I start my story?
  • What does it mean when agents say my book is too quiet?

For someone who isn't familiar with basic structure, this would be an appropriate introductory course; however, I was expecting something more in-depth based on the title. I thought it would go into some detail about plotting points, etc, rather than just listing "the messy middle" as 2 parts, where the character is first reacting and then being more proactive. I purchased the course for more information about specific plot points within a novel structure, and this course did not meet those needs. However, for someone newly interested in writing a novel, it would probably be a good introduction.

The course is interesting, but the tutor is a let down. I have posted assignments but there's no support or feedback. I don't think I would recommend this course.

I really enjoyed the class. It really helped me a lot on the book I’m writing currently and I’m very glad I took the course. I have been having a writer blocks lately and this class opened my eyes to things I needed to know.

Okay, WOW. Listen. I'm a pantser and it's always worked for me. I didn't realize the core of this course was outlining until I was already invested, but it didn't make everything so "set in stone," so to speak---there's room for interpretation and to put your own spin on things. I generally shy away from guidelines on writing, as I end up coming away feeling more discouraged than anything, but not this time. I have such a sense of hope and excitement after taking this course---no wonder it's rated so high. I have a finished first draft of a story with characters I love but a kinda flat plot, and I'd been putting off going back and fixing it as I didn't know which direction the characters wanted to take it in. After taking this course, I have some new ideas I can't wait to get started on. I'll also say, as someone with ADHD who can't focus long enough to watch a movie, the way this course was laid out made me keep coming back for more. The lessons are short and sweet but absolutely packed with info. I bought this at the sale price but it's absolutely worth whatever the full price is---best money I've spent in a long time. Thank you so much, Sally!

I have read many books on how to write. They are on my shelf as I speak. But the way this course is presented, opened up so many new avenues and techniques for me to use in the approach and critique of my own writing. In just one hour, I can already identify flaws and omissions in my work that hours of re-reading and self-examination have not provided with the kind of clarity this seminar has managed to do. I love the encouraging tone of Sally's voice - even when she's delivering a deadly blow to your notions of grandeur - because you can't deny that you are guilty of the sins she has identified. I've written and self-published one book (to some acclaim - Long-listed for The Stephen Leacock Award (top ten in Canada) and I am now revising a completed novel and beginning yet another. I wish I'd taken this class before my first book (who knows, it might have made it to the Short List? - at least, I'm sure that it would have been a better book). Nevertheless, I'm glad that I have the benefit of it for the works in progress. Thank you Sally. P.H. Oliver

Already benefiting from this course and haven't even finished it. My problem was not knowing "to make matters worse" to be a tool. I used it but I think by default lol knowing that I had to always add conflict/raise the stakes in my wip. But now I know why, it helps to create a page-turner. I can already see a great difference in my wip and I LOVE having the template, it helps me to work out my story plot with confidence. Thanks so much. From your student and highly successful bestselling novelist Avril Victor lol lol!

I’m attempting to write my first novel. I’ve read so many books, watched videos, taken other courses but this is everything in a simple to understand and use immediately format. I feel like I’m across the table listening and soaking up the wisdom. She makes complex things easy to understand. I realize I’ve done somethings right and it’s great for this to be confirmed in the lesson and other things I need to change in my story. I love the pace, it works for me all from my phone and I feel like my story will be better now and what I’m learning will stick in my brain.

I enjoyed Sally’s sense of humour during the course, the fun pictures, and the clear examples with the addition of pictures and known movies. The layout of the course was well planned out with clear instruction and helpful handouts.

I am going to start out with 4 stars. I finished watching the course without doing the activities. I found the information Sally presented to be very motivating. NANOWRIMO starts soon. I plan to use the homework and insights in this course to write an idea I have for a book and (hopefully) reach my 50,000+ word goal. I am new to writing a novel. I am looking forward to writing next month and putting these lessons into practice. I will update in December to let you know how it worked out form me.

A good course that helped me review the notions I already knew while at the same time giving a new perspective. The ideas for the scenes were flowing in my head while listening/reading through the lectures and the exercises helped me get over the difficult parts. I will definitely come back to the lectures whenever I'll have a hard time writing. Thank you! Anca A.

Lots of food for thought about novel writing. I not only have pages of notes about the course material, but also pages of notes about ideas the course material triggered to help me improve in-progress stories. I'm very happy I took the course, well worth the price. I created my own worksheets from some of the lectures, and I'm starting to use them for my works in progress and for tinkering with new ideas, and the in-progress works are much stronger for this exercise (and will, I hope, continue to improve as I practice). Subtracted half a star for audio level inconsistencies, but that's possibly being too nit-picky.

I sure found the holes in my manuscript! I'm so glad I did this course. Back to the drawing board for more motivated characters, and a more satisfying climax and ending. Thank you Sally!
