What you will learn

How To Use Water-Soluble Graphite Pencils

How to create depth using multiple graphite tones

How to draw and shade a variety of subjects

How to use water over graphite carefully with consideration to the overall effect

Why take this course?

In this course you'll find 6 subjects that you can learn to draw and shade with graphite pencils then wet them like you would watercolour pencils! My first love was watercolour so using these pencils is a fantastic experience.

You do not need to have any free-hand drawing experience either!

For each subject I provide a feint outline drawing that you can print off (if you want to trace or draw the subject free hand please do! We have a free hand drawing course using a grid system I developed also on Udemy)

We'll go over the outline, draw the details then shade the picture with various shades of graphite.

The pencils I use and recommend are the Aquarelle Faber-Castell Graphite Set. There's 5 tones in the pack:

  • HB

  • 2B

  • 4B

  • 6B

  • 8B

These pencils are also designed to be used with water. You do not have to use the set I use, but do make sure the graphite pencils you use are water-soluble if you are going to wet the picture :-P

After shading the picture we'll grab a brush and go over the subject with a little water! There are 6 subjects in the course:

1. Cabin

2. Wheelbarrow

3. Drill Monkey (graphite only - no wash)

4. Medway Queen

5. Hopalong Cassidy (graphite only - no wash)

6. Lady with the Red Hat

For the Drill Monkey and Hopalong Cassidy we do not wet the pictures as I feel the effects we achieve look great without, however you can wet your picture if you like :o)

If you want to learn how to use water-soluble graphite pencils then this course is for you. There's a wide range of subjects and the techniques you'll learn you can apply to your own pictures!

The cabin drawing was fun. I am used to drawing , but I have never used graphite water pencils before, but do use watercolor. I was impressed with the softer blended finish with water compared to using blending stumps or mini brushes. Super teaching. The only downside were the pencils blunt easy, even with regular twisting. compared to the faber 9000 I regularly use. Looking forward to attempting the next tutorial.

This is not a course, rather a bunch of draw along me projects. Of 6 projects, 2 is not related to water soluble graphite, one is really trivial, the other 3 is a bit cartonish drawing projects with water soluble graphite. In regular courses, there is a curriculum, projects are application of what is being taught, carefully selected and crafted for some purpose. Here is just some random projects with water soluble graphite. So will you be able take away some knowledge to your own project about water soluble graphite, well i’m not sure. Perhaps it not structered, not intended for this at all. Technical background, recording quality, zoom level etc is not good enough. Given line drawings a bit different then the used ones in classes. So you has to chase the flow, but video quality don’t help much. Unfortunatelly this is one of the few ( if not only ) course in Udemy dedicated to water soluble graphite.

I have learnt a lot about shading to depict objects that are next to each other. The teacher shares his thoughts as he illustrates. One thing that I realised was that I had been using a pencil sharpener that gave too finer point on the lead, and this made it difficult to shade with the side of the pencil. I changed sharpeners to give a broader angle and it became easier to get an even blend of graphite laid on the paper. Thank You I have learnt much.

when some videos end and another one starts, sometimes it is with missing content. I see that some more details are added to drawing which gets lost in transition

I had some trouble following the captions. some of the words probably weren't written correctly and some might be because British English is somewhat different than USA.

I have taken many courses with this artist and I have liked them all. This one is very good also but I did not like the subjects of the tutorials as much. But it is fine, I did learn about how to use watercolour graphite pencils and that was my objective. Thank you.
