Instructor Info

Mieszko Lacinski is a professional Texture Artist/3D Generalist who had experience working on movies such as Wonder Woman, Thor Ragnarok, Justice League, The Nutcraker and more. He is currently working as a CG supervisor/Texture Lead for 3DE studio in Poland and loves his work because of the interaction and help that he can bring to the team. His advice for artists who want to make it in the film/movie industry is to always see the value of reference. He believes it is the most important tool to achieve any type of asset in 3D. Whenever possible, it's significant to find and collect references first and stick to them whenever possible. Mieszko's other interests include space exploration and basically anything related to space. He also loves 3D printing and the idea of using 3D printing to save lives.

This is a great course for those who already know Maya (he moves pretty fast, so having a bit of understanding is helpful). The ZBrush and Substance Painter stuff is pretty straight forward, although he does use Substance Source (this can be ignored if you're familiar with using Substance Painter's default materials).

The instructor is very knowledgeable, despite some weird mistakes he makes now and then especially in the UV section, which is totally fine, given it's mostly an uncut tutorial aimed at a VFX pipeline. All in all, I enjoyed seeing a studio driven workflow and I learned valuable tips I wasn't able to find in other similar tutorials such as working with LODs, naming conventions and keeping only 3 files for moving stuff between Maya and Zbrush (From, To and a generic temp file). Also some ZBrush tips like how to move meshes individually by polygroup with Move Topological Brush, how to keep UVs after decimation, etc. were extremely helpful. Really good, quick course that goes directly to its point.

Modelling detail is a slow process artists should be avoiding unless they are going to use that detail in close up LOD's. To encourage this in a tutorial without mentioning the fact that there is another way to do it seems a bit careless.

A great concise course. I thought the length was perfect and while I didn't follow it 100% step-by-step I did learn some great new tips and tricks, even as a game artist. I did find the instructor said 'umm' and 'ahh' way too often and became a little irritating to hear, but that's only a minor thing and I can look past that. Easily worth the money and I'm happy with my results. It covers the entire workflow of a VFX piece from modelling all the way to LODs and texturing. One thing I think could definitely have been done better was the UV section. The instructor just uses the automatic unwrap in ZBrush which resulted in quite ugly UV's. His results were still great but I think spending a little more time to get proper layed out UVs that make sense would have made this course a 5-star
