Create impactful designs that will grab your viewers and engage them

Give your work a punch that will be hard to forget

Why take this course?

The subject of Composition and Design is broad and there are a variety of compositional tools that have been used over time to emphasize ideas, stories, and religious thought.

In this course we will focus primarily on two areas: Notan, which deals with light and dark and the visual structure, and the very flexible tool of Rebatement, which works with the underlying architectural structure. Much is said about Dynamic Symmetry and how it helps in designing your work. Rebatement is a variation on Dynamic Symmetry. Dynamic Symmetry is based on a mathmatical 'root' system. Because that system is somewhat fixed, the ratio of your work and canvas size must also be fixed to stay within the structure of dynamic symmetry. Rebatement is a MUCH more flexible variation on dynamic symmetry as you won't be bound by the fixed ratios of heights to widths. The Golden Section as well as the Rule of Thirds is based on Rebatement. Some people call this the magic grid. Magic, because it so quickly helps to design a pleasing composition. It can be used for portraiture, plein air, still life painting, abstract painting as well as photographers.

Using images from master artists, as well as some of my work, we will analyze why a painting works and what tools were used to create these vivid works of art.

Finally, you will learn how to use both Notan and the variation of Dynamic Symmetry, Rebatement, to create strong and visually pleasing works that will read across a room.

In addition, I will teach you how to make your own rebatment viewfinders that you can use in your studio and in the field.

This class is useful for any visual artist as well as for any lover of the arts.

Je ne connaissais pas ces 2 concepts et c'est une bonne entrée en matière. Synthétique et expliqué simplement.

I've been using Phi ratio for some time and was interested in other composition techniques. This course was just what I needed to learn better composition staging. The instructor is knowledgeable and the course progressed smoothly.

This course is brilliant and a must do if you want to up your game! I am learning so much in this course about notan and rabatment that I never quite grasped in the past. The course is nicely laid out in that there is a good mix of short videos and demonstrations, thorough definitions of important words in readings, and lots of different photo examples to get the idea across. This is really helpful for those of us who are visual learners. My favorite parts so far have been the side bars which help complete the concepts by giving background information. I also love how fast this course is considering the value of the content is crucial for understanding the art world. I am an art instructor and will definitely be introducing and teaching these concepts to my students.

I really enjoyed this course. I had actually never realized that an artist makes your eye go where they want it to go! After watching this, I feel that I will notice artwork differently and I will take the tools that I have just learned to hopefully help me with my own drawings! Everything was explained extremely well.

I'm so glad I decided to take Lizz Tucker's course! She is so patient and calm as she teaches each lesson step by step. She makes sure to go over every single detail so students of any level can learn and enjoy the process. Her soothing voice and evident skill and mastery have helped build my confidence in my painting and drawing abilities. I can't wait to take more of her courses and continue my art journey!

I learned soo much about Notan in this video...that when applied, I can see why some of my drawings work and why some do not in their design. Why some of my drawings are more compelling than others because of the principles of Notan!! And I finally understand Rebatement from Lizz's video, which I never quite got before. Great detailed examples to explain it further and how to use it in my own work. Super interesting!! This is a great video for learning design principles I had heard of but didn't quite grasp fully until now!

I like this course. I have always greatly appreciated the arts from a strictly fan standpoint. I really enjoy learning new concepts and tools for how artists can create. It will absolutely encourage me to look more closely and through additional lenses when viewing artwork in the future. I loved learning about both Notan and Rebatement. I often don't take the time to think and appreciate the preparation and thought that goes into planning a painting before one actually begins to paint! I will be so much more engaged with looking "behind" what meets the eye. This was a wonderful course. I am so excited I took and learned something new about an art I already appreciated so much! Such great work Lizz. You did an amazing job teaching me something new.

Lizz, the instructor, is clear and easy to understand, very knowledgable in her subject matter, and downright charming. The portion of her course on Notan taught me the importance of being able to look at a subject and abstract the form in terms of light and dark to create a better balance. The portion of her course on Rebatement taught me about the underlying architecture of a painting and how important it is for the work to have "good bones". Her examples of master work, especially the George Bellows paintings, were especially interesting. It was amazing to see how closely the paintings followed this type of design. It was then great to see how she applied these same principles to her own lovely work. This is a fascinating and beautifully put together course that I highly recommend. It will give you a whole new way to look at your own work!

Outstanding video! Very informative and inspirational! I learned so much that my next project will undoubtedly be better and my next museum visit so much more exciting and thought-provoking. Kudos to the teacher and to the tech team. The visuals were so professional and extremely helpful in understanding the subject matter.

I am not a painter, but I want to learn how to look at paintings and see deeper into them and the way they are composed. After taking this course, I feel I have a good idea of Notan and Rebatement and how they are used in setting up a painting. I will certainly use these each time I look at a painting or drawer from now on.

Elizabeth Tucker, the instructor of this tutorial, has visually and audibly allowed for two most important Composition and Design practices to be simplified and understood, Notan and Rebatement. The words, Notan and Rebatement can sound daunting/complicated, yet I learnt that they are common, essential practices. Notan, a concept assisting in the fundamental practice to help make certain our compositions apply darks and lights, and Rebatement, so well clarified as to where to place focal points of interest on our canvases, come alive so practically in this online class, due to short sessions, that get to the point with very clear explanation and visual examples, along with simple homework assignments to solidify what was taught. I have found this course to be very helpful.

Without a good composition, even the most perfectly executed painting will flop. Lizz explains two fundamental “secrets” to great composition very clearly, with lots of examples to illustrate the concepts. I’m so excited to apply these principles to my own art! Thank you, Lizz, I always wondered if great artists were mysteriously gifted, or just knew something the rest of us did not. These two concepts are like road maps to make sure a work gets exactly where it needs to go!
