Level Design

Post Processing Volumes

Sculpting terrains

Texturing terrains

Level lighting

Baking lightmaps

How to record videos from within Unity

Why take this course?

In this course I will be showing you a professional workflow for creating a level from a blank scene through to completion that is inspired by the video game: "The Last of Us".

We will be using free props and models collected from various places online and I will be showing you how you can modify them in Substance Painter to make props fit within an environment that meets your vision.

We will be covering the following:

  • Terrain sculpting

  • Painting terrain textures

  • Arranging flowers, grass, ivy, rocks and trees

  • Level layout of an abandoned house

  • Re-texturing assets in Substance Painter

  • Creating decals in Substance Painter

  • Lighting and baking lightmaps in Unity

  • Using post processing volumes

  • Adding environmental sounds

  • Recording video within Unity for your portfolios

By the end of this course you will have developed the skills needed to build your own levels for your own games.

I look forward to seeing you in the course

This is a very worthwhile course. It takes you from a blank screen and shows you how to create terrain, then populate it with varied vegetation, add waters and use all manner of objects and props to generate buildings with interior furniture and items. Lastly, it teaches how to effectively light both indoors and outdoors. Work your way through this course and you will be able to build levels from the ground up and utilize many useful techniques as you develop your level. The instruction is clear and evenly paced; everything is explained in good detail and is easy to follow. An excellent course for anyone looking to learn how to build a level in Unity.

This course is more for building an environment in Unity rather than level design. There's barely any editing and the instructor regularly makes mistakes and fumbled with the controls (never using snap rotation for example). This could've been half the length if it were edited properly and if the Blender and SP sections were cut out. Where a normal course will say something like "here's how to do X, now you try it, and then here's a challenge", this course will spend 20+ mins on a section of very repetitive tasks. This was mostly a waste of time for me, besides learning more about the Unity terrain tool.

This course has everyting that begginer needs. From start to finish it was engaing and I learned a lot! Only issue I had is that some things are outdated. I had a lot of trouble setting everything up. Easily one of the best courses i followed in a long time!

I learned so many great tips for how to make a highly polished and very atmospheric environment in Unity. This course was exactly what I was looking for as a beginner with 3D in Unity and it certainly delivered. I will be referencing these lectures for a long time to come. I had some trouble with the assets in URP, stick to the built-in pipeline when starting this.

Easy to follow along with the instructor and has an excellent way of showing you how different tools work in Unity, would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is interested in creating a virtual environment (especially for the first time) within Unity!

Very helpful and amazing course. The new things I learned were light-baking, post-processing volumes and the basics of substance painter.

Pete's courses are absolutely loaded with incredible content. I have learned so much from his courses that it is hard to describe the exact amount I've learned. Pete has also been extra-generous in answering fully any questions I have had. If you want to learn about creating environment art in Unity, take Pete's classes. There is no substitute for his classes.

Had a lot of fun following this project. Pete shares a lot of knowledge through the course and it was a pleasure to know more about Unity. Everything turns easy with his explanations. Would highly recommend it to anyone!

A very good course. The trainer is very experienced in creating environments. Some reviews criticize that he tries around more often, decides things while recording and some activities are repetitive. However, I find it very helpful because you can actually observe and understand the creative process as you work, even if things don't fit right away or need to be readjusted. Some aspects about technical stuff of some engine features (i.e. light probes, some configuration values, etc.) could be explaind slower and more detailes, but that's okay.

A great course and a very good teacher. Others seem to dislike that he is experimenting when changing settings, but this is the best part. Since he is talking about the results you get why he is changing some settings and why he thinks that other settings are better. You can learn from this considerations and keep it in mind when you build a level from scratch. I completed this course and I learned a lot. I also saw that others were complaining about the programming techniques and not using efficient code like using arrays: Another advantage of this course: It's not a course for advanced programmers. If you're a programmer, you will see ways to optimize the code presented by Pete. Beginners will have the chance to grasp more readable, simpler code even if it costs more lines. And I absolutely like to hear Pete's "I'm quite happy with that".

Good course, learned a lot of useful things. Some complaints I had were how certain sections, like painting the grass and placing the window panes didn't need to be shown for as long as it did, because it started getting repetitive and there was nothing new to watch, yet I still had to in case the instructor said something useful. It would be good if these parts were sped up. I also wish that for most of the substance painter and a little of the lighting sections, there was a bit more explanation for what things meant because it started being just copying the instructor's workflow without knowing the meaning behind steps. Finally, this is outrageously picky of me but the instructor said "quite nice" frequently which got annoying pretty quickly. Other than these complaints, I like that every part of the scene was covered. It was good how the course covered a lot of common questions I'd ask myself when thinking about level design, i.e. how do I make my store-bought assets fit in more with a particular scene to "make it my own?" And I'm glad that the result of the scene really focused on top-notch quality rather than being cheap and ugly. The instructor is also still active for answering questions and replies in less than a day, so that was really nice.

Amazing course for those who wants to make their first steps into the level design. All the basics of terrain sculpting and texturing are very well described. Of course here and there are some parts of course which are a little bit frasturating and badly designed. For example some failed attempts could ve been avoided (not all of them). Lighing part was also intuitive from tutor's side too much playing with values and options. Nevertheless, even with all small issues one thing which makes course absolutlely amazing is quick response and feedback from tutor and that alone made me rate this tutorial not 5 stars otherwise, this course is solid 4 stars.

As of now things aren't clear, Running into too many problems and solving it by myself, would have been nice if things were clear

I'm a programmer more than a designer and this course so far has been very informative for me and easy to follow with some very useful tips made regarding rendering side of things.

Really really informative Couse. If you are beginner or an intermediate you should really take this one. I really enjoyed this course. Learned a lot of things, got stuck here and there learned how to to troubleshoot the problems. Only thing I didn't like about it was the lighting part, could have been more accurate and detailed. Apart from that it was anything above what I expecting. Keep bringing such courses. Thank you for being my mentor Mr. Pete Cheers!
