What you will learn

How to design, build and administer a Linux home server

How to find, install and run applications that will be useful at home

Description

Learn to use the Linux operating system and build a server in your own home.

Building a home server is an excellent way to learn how to use the Linux operating system. It also allows you to reuse any old laptop or desktop computer you have lying around at home for something everyone in your home can use:

- Save files from your laptop, phone, etc to one central location

- Download and watch movies from the internet

- Upload your photos, view them from your phone and back them up to the cloud

Building your own server will take you behind the scenes on how an operating system really works. Using software which is 100% free, you will learn:

- How to install, maintain and secure a working Linux server

- What are the differences between the various Linux versions

- How to use your server as a personal secure web server and file server, and where to get ideas for other uses for it

- Key linux command line skills and how to put them to practical use

- How to troubleshoot common problems as they happen

Using skills which are directly relevant to the workplace, you will learn how to monitor, secure and backup your own private server. The downloadable guides also provide a wealth of information for you to take away and study at your own pace.

Thanks for the lesson it was great. Now I have a server in my house that views all the devices they are connected to the modem where it connect the server. I can manage it and upload websites The problem is that I don't see him from devices connected to other modems other networks. Alexander

Great course with a result of knowledge to deploy my first server at home with security. My family now can watch my favorite movies and series anytime. We also learned to host our own web server with Apache and Wordpress. Next step is learn to deploy a MERN app with NGINX in this server.

This course is very well done. The instructor provides great step by step guide to home Linux server setup. He covers what to do and the all important Why. His lectures are great for beginner to intermediates. I would like to see the course extended to cover home networking basics. Most home networks have at least one but often two routers, your router and the ISPs installed router. A high level discussion on how to setup port forwarding through one or two routers would be great. Finally, and related, would be more details on how to access your home server remotely via ssh.

Very nice instruction. The volume seems a little low in places, but the clear explanations and good material make up for any other deficiencies.

I have some tech background, but really didn't have any experience with servers. This was an EXCELLENT starter course into that world. It gave me the base I need to get started, know what to look for, and what questions to ask to keep going. I can't recommend this enough for anybody interested in diving into creating their own server.

So far a solid - easy to learn course. Instructor does a good job explaining the content. My only gripe would be the voice audio-recording has a "hiss" or white noise in the background. The Instructors voice is still fairly clear though. (Listening via external professional audio amp & DAC with Sennheiser HD 600 headphones)

Quite well laid out. Begins at a very basic level. Great for someone who is starting. And it gets better as it goes on.

The course so far is a good initial view of Ubuntu Server but possibly could be a bit more in depth for absolute beginners where the command lines are shown

I learned much more than I expected from 3.5h of videos! Course shown not only how to set up the server but also WHY you want to do that!

Love that this exists. This is helping me build a bridge to a new level of linux-admin (while helping me re-purpose an old machine). A student of this course would benefit by having a little bit of existing Linux experience, as some concepts are glossed over (I wouldn't call that a fault of the course: it helps keep the material moving and focused, and there is enough of a Linux crash course included, throughout, to give the student a foundation to jump off of and fill in blanks on their own time). This course is well balanced between getting started quickly, gaining knowledge of the beginning essentials, and doing something fun/useful. I would highly recommend!
