I find that since I use the setting the boundaries and giving the two options has made such a huge difference. My son's confidence has improved as it feels like he is now making the choice and is responsible for it. The how do you think we should do this is also an awesome technique cause it is his idea and I tell you his solutions are awesome. So much more responsible and want to take on new challenges. Like cooking - he is 8 - love it! Also tried the technique where you describe and comment on something he has just done, worked like a charm, and boosted his self confidence. He recently had to do an oral for school and instead of saying the usual well done - I am so proud of you. I focused on his excellent facial expressions that were so appropriate for each particular situation. Well his face just beamed with pride. So thank you Robin for helping me appreciate the little things and helping me change my son to do what I want without him feeling that I am demanding. My first interaction with this course came in the form of an email from the instructor welcoming me into the course and asking my reason for joining and which area in my parenting I felt needed attention. In my reply I explained that I have 4 children who are 6 years and under and that I find myself yelling and screaming far more often then I really wanted to. Within a day or so (if not less) the instructor replied to my email with suggestions to get me started and invited me to start the course. I took his suggestions and went to work....and magically my 2.5,4.5 and 6 yr old began to listen and I can tell they appreciated the dialogue we were having as opposed to the old me "talking at them". off course my guess is the 2.5 yr old was just emulating her siblings (which I am fine with). In the 3 weeks since starting the course I can't tell you how many times I have jumped back and forth between the old way and the new way and with out fail, every time they respond like a charm to the approach taught in this course. Thank you for sharing these skills. The examples you provide are real, concrete and usable. I believe I will be using this course as a reference for a long time after I am finished it. The videos were great- short and too the point. as a parent I often feel helpless but these techniques are simple and quick to implement- plus they're practical and no need to study tons of books. The techniques also would be useful in assisting me to be more conscious of my words and behaviour- so that I don't resort to old habits if I want results from my kid!
