What you will learn

Derive variables used in Reinforced Concrete Elements

Understand the Philosophy of dimensioning Reinforced Concrete Elements

Understand the behavior of Reinforced Concrete based on Reinforcement Ratio

State the Assumptions used in the Design of RC elements

Understand why Steel is used as reinforcing material in concrete

Why take this course?

Civil Engineering Courses by Hamid El Darwich:

Learn the language of Reinforced Concrete; You probably have taken Statics and Mechanics of Materials, so this short course will introduce you to the essential concepts that you should know before starting design of concrete elements.

What to expect from this course:

After completion of this course, you are expected to be able to know the derivation of the variables used in reinforced concrete design such as reinforcement ratio, nominal resistivity of concrete, etc.

In addition, this course guides you through the derivation of these variables. You will also be able to understand the basis of dimensioning of RC elements.

What are exactly the points covered in this course:

This course focuses on the following concepts:

  • Concrete material and its elements
  • Why does concrete need reinforcement
  • Why steel is used as reinforcing material
  • Derivation of RC variables such as effective depth, nominal capacity, etc.
  • Safety factors used in design (most used combination)
  • Assumption used in design

Students completing the course will have basic knowledge to start design lectures. The course is easy to follow; all of the resources needed are posted in the course content. Other instructors directly start with the design problems making them hard to be understood, this course is your  "Starters".

The instructor went from very simplistic "what's in concrete" and jumps right to very complicated formulas without clearly explaining the formulas or the variables.

The label on the bottom of the screen is very distracting, too frequent and covers some of the text. There should be practice questions in order to better understand the calculations and how to use the formulas.

Wow what I found out taking this coarse was all the Algebra I fought so hard to learn and could not relate to real life makes far more sense from this perspective. I now see the mathematical value and it is far more interesting.

I can that’s very nice of you I don’t use before ACI code but now I liked to much but I need more reviews that lecture you did. Thank you agin. Sincerely:NFY

I enjoyed the course, but some of the concepts can be better explained. Focusing on the theory, it is important to take more time to explain what the equations you derived really mean in the real world: it moved sometimes too fast to follow and had to rewind a couple of times and derive the equations myself to understand the concept

The subscript should be clearer. For instance, 'Es' should be typed with 'E' and then a subscript 's' to make it clearer in the calculations. Similarly for Epsilon and other greek numerics. And if examples can be given it would be great! Thanks.

it works to understanding ths basics of concrete, if you are looking for design instructions along moments and shears forces, skip to the next course.

I did not watch all of the videos but I believe that this course serves as a reference in case a structural engineer wants to know the derivation of the equations we use in the RC design. In addition, I like the practice questions in this course. They are very critical questions and important. I recommend this course.

i never thought i would understand these formulas . i used just to copy&paste and apply only ,AWESOME :D

I enrolled in this course to check the quizes. The second quiz is a bit challenging :p but I did well and I learned a lot

thanks sir for the course. its really important to understand theory rather than plugging numbers in equations !

I think we all should be out of this formula application culture. Sir, I found your lectures to be very much conceptual and easy to visualize and learn. Since am currently doing on this course I will leave additional feedback when done. Till now it is amazing. Message support is excellent too. Thanks Sir for this wonderful course. Edit: I have completed this course and it has helped me a lot in my campus studies the concept are clear, everything is pretty well explained.
