Why take this course?

Welcome to the "Musician's Guide" Series!

This series is pulled directly from the courses I've created for my university position in Music Business. All of these courses are designed for the everyday musician - amateur or professional - who has little or no knowledge on the topic, but wants to master it.

This class is all about Copyright.

100% Answer Rate! Every single question posted to this class is answered within 24 hours by the instructor.

It is ideal for anyone who has had an interest in copyright, or a need to understand copyright. Especially:

  • Creators: If you are making music, you need to understand your rights.

  • Consumers: If you are working with music, and want to know if you can copy a song, delete a song, or make a mashup of a song, this course is for you!

  • Musicians: If you are going to be recorded, you should understand how things will work when the recording is released, and what rights you have to your performance.

  • Producers: If you are using samples in your tracks, you need to understand copyright!

  • Curious Minds: Anyone interested in how copyright law works, where it comes from, and where it might be going is invited to be a part of this class.

In this class, we start with the most basic question: How do we define music? Once we have a definition, we start to look at how music is protected with copyright, ways that it isn't, and how to work with it for fun and profit. I'll walk you through every step of the issue and explain the logic behind every concept.

The goal of this class is for you to understand how to make copyright protection work for you.

These classes are great if you have never studied any concepts related to Copyright or Music Copyright.

As a beginning song writer with the expectation of publishing written and recorded material, this is EXCELLENT information on the (boring :D ) business side of music and how to try to protect your property and not impugn on others.

An excellent primer to enlighten you about the fundamentals of copyright. What I enjoyed the most about this course was the abundance of clear, well-explained examples. For each single concept that was brought up, there was at least one (sometimes more!) example to illustrate its meaning and what the purpose / function of it is. This made it very easy to understand how the various aspects of copyright work together, and what exactly protects what (copyright / trademark / right of publicity). This entire course has a pleasant "flow" to it and despite the topic itself being so dry and confusing, it was presented in a way that is easy to digest here.

Very informative and easy to follow along and understand. I have learned things that I was too lazy or naive to find out about properly

Great course, with clear and calm teaching. I will be referencing this often whenever I need clarity on something I've forgotten.

It has definitely helped me delve more deeply into aspects of copyright I'd never even thought of, so I'm really glad to have gotten this course to save me from legal issues I probably would have fallen into without even realizing it. There is lots of helpful information provided here that would have taken me forever to find by myself. Great job!

One of the first things we learn from the course is melody and lyrics are copyrightable. The lecturer's explanation helps us to understand difficult aspects of rights.

This is probably the best introduction to copyright for musicians that I have seen, since it covers obscure but important concepts with clear examples, and it highlights the uncertainty surrounding copyright as an inescapable characteristic. Although the instructor references more practical material to be covered later (e.g. copyright splits will be discussed further in the section on publishing), that is not actually part of this course - it is part of another course in the "Musician's Guide" series. But this is a great foundational starting point.
