I know other courses of Jason (Music Theory) which are excellent and well detailed, but so far this course left me very disappointed. What I was looking for was a solid foundation of music history that would also analyze things from a musical perspective. What I got was a very brief scratch on the surface. There are not enough music examples and they are not much commented on. I would have wished that the pieces would be analyzed a bit, explained what is happening there. I remember having most information heard in school 15 years ago, the course doesn't go any further than that. Additionally, it isn't even that well presented. Jason is repeating himself a lot and therefore not bringing much information across. To me it seems the course has hardly been prepared at all. A few keynotes for each section that Jason is trying to stretch to at least a few minutes, and a bunch of screenshots from Google Images, till closing the chapter with one music example. I'm not looking for an 8 semester curriculum about music history, but what is presented here isn't nearly enough to meet my expectations. I can merely use it as a starting point for further research.

I'm taking this corse and while this guy gives me good info, he talks a lot and is correcting himself more than would be comfortable. but other than that this is a fairly good corse

As a whole, it was a good match. I am in my 80s and no longer good with technology. I had some problems accessing the you tube videos.

The course is being good but im really missing much more examples of music....i know there is copyright and stuff but it would´ve been so nice to be referred to song or pieces of music that would help to understand all the theory and make the course more enjoyable.

The course is, so far, amazingly good. So much information, and really well communicated. My literal only critique is some of the verbiage not being on the screen meant I had to frequently pause and "dig" to understand what word was being said and what it means. While this is/was great for a learning process, it at times interrupted my own flow a little too much. Very much looking forward to part 4+

This was a very interesting course that gave a lot of context to the world history behind classical western music. I really enjoyed the first segment as it seemed to touch more on why music developed the way it did. I was hoping it would go more into the evolution of western music theory, but it looks like the professor's goal was to avoid music theory as much as possible. I think a better description for sections 2 and 3 would be "an account of what music was like in different regions and periods of time in Europe". There seems to be less historical context in those sections. Something that I think could be improved for mobile app users: instead of putting the links to the music in one big document at the beginning; make a Udemy document with a link to the relevant video right after the lecture (same style as your course advertisement at the end of the course). That will be easier for mobile users to access. Another frustration is the instructor extends the length of his lectures with blank space to account for the time you would have spent listening to the song if he had been able to play it in his lecture. This gives a poor experience, especially for mobile users, who now have to come back after listening to the youtube video and skip through the blank space in the lecture in order to get the completion and move on to the next lecture. Overall, there is some great material here, but it wasn't what I was hoping it would be.

I have been following Jason now for 6 courses for Music Theory, have completed a composition class of his as well. He is by far the absolute best at what he does. Naturally, I had to pick up the history lessons as well. I am one of those that needs to know the "why" in terms of what we do as a species, learning from the beginning and with Dr. Jason Allen, is perfect. Thank you!

I used this class to prepare for my graduate placement exam. It highlights the important parts of each historical period through the Early Baroque and follows the textbook quite closely.

Interesting and informative - so basics met right there. Put some of music theory into context, perhaps could do with a bit more of this. Later parts a bit clunky in linking to external sources for examples rather than dircet incorperation - but understandable why was done this way rather than constant fight to show fair use / educational use for each; but slight down side is links occasionally disappear.

Hi Jason just letting you know that i enjoyed the first part of my music history class. I find the reading of music confusing but plan to take a course on that and learn to read music eventually. Thanks again for the lessons, as i find it fascinating learning about a subject i love.
