Somatic movement is a neuromuscular re-education technique which teaches you to release and relax your muscles so that you can regain proper muscle function again.  The movements are slow and gentle and promote sensory awareness to increase brain-muscle coordination.  The exercises are performed consciously with the intention of focusing on the internal experience of the movement rather than the external appearance and are very helpful in improving body awareness.

Through a method of slowly contracting, releasing, lengthening and relaxing a muscle or group of muscles, you will re-educate your body to move in an efficient and pain-free way.

Based on the original teachings of Thomas Hanna, these exercises can change unhelpful learned muscular patterns.  Some benefits of  somatic movement methods are:

Simple but powerful exercises with tangible measurable results, which has resulted in my body becoming more free from tension than I would have expected. The exercises have also increased my body awareness, so I'm more aware of tension in my body. I use the exercises to release that tension rather than allowing it to build up into muscle spasm. The exercises require focus and concentration, which has helped me to key into my body during the day in a mindful way.

Instructor reading the slides rather than amplifying them with examples would be more beneficial. Adults don't need to have someone read to them.

Somantics: Tune in to Your Body & Enjoy Freedom of Movement is an amazing course. I'm 58 years old and I wish i'd done it years ago. I've picked up a few bad habits over the years and my body has been suffering tension and stiffness all over. This course has brought new life to my body, it feels so light and at ease after the hour session. My joints feel well oiled and smooth in their movement and I seem glide and float when take a step or reach for something. I also have a wonderful calmness about me and feel so relaxed. I will recommend this course to all of my friends and family, I believe it will be a valuable tool in keeping us all physically, mentally and emotionally healthy. Thank you so much for your clear instructions Josie they are easy to follow and set at a good pace. Great value for money and you are an excellent teacher. As I said I wish i'd found you years ago. Very boring. You need to add more pictures. And be in video not just reading what we can read in a book.

I've been using the somatic movements for about a week, so it's a work in progress. However, I can feel that I'm starting to re-educate my body and brain to sense the muscles that seem to have forgotten how to work the way that they were meant to. The lectures are clear and easy to follow, and there's a downloadable manual to accompany them. Josie is very knowledgeable, and helpful, when you ask a question. I wish that I had found somatic movements 30 years ago, especially this course.

I started this a few weeks ago because of tightness (stress) around my mid back and sides. After 10 months of trying stretches and other exercise - all beneficial but didn’t seem to affect the tightness - this is having an effect. I thought I was good at relaxing but this course has added a different dimension. The best thing is that I now feel it can get better instead of feeling so negative and depressed about it. Thank you Josie.
