What you will learn

How to use one-point perspective and other measuring techniques to draw street scenes

How to add details such as cars, people, trees, and lampposts

How to add shadows and depth with ink and watercolor

How to use watercolor to show light and texture

Why take this course?

The best part of travel sketching is capturing lively, bustling street scenes, whether it’s a big city like New York or a small village in Europe.

To do that quickly and accurately, it helps to have a grasp of the basics of perspective.

In this class, we’ll work on simple one-point perspective with New York as our model.

Then we’ll go to France and look at a village scene where those rules of perspective have to be tweaked to handle a sloping, winding road and a jumble of buildings that are lined up in a row.

Finally, we’ll go to Italy and work on adding just enough detail to really capture all the elements that make a scene so compelling.

Using pencil, ink, and watercolor, we’ll work on:

  • Perspective

  • Light and shadow

  • Varying line weights

  • Differences in color and shading in the foreground and background

  • What details to focus on, what to simplify, and what to leave out entirely

By the end of this class, you’ll have all the skills you need to incorporate lively street scenes into your sketchbook practice, when you travel and also in your own neighborhood.

It is exactly what I was hoping for. I want to be able to sketch scenes when I travel, but really struggle with perspective.

This course has several different images that help you practice perspective when it is obvious and when it isn't. I really love the way Amy takes the time to explain her techniques, where to start, what to consider before she starts her demonstration. I find the course easy to follow along or stop, practice and pick up again where I left off.

I painted what I thought was a beautiful painting of my house when my husband pointed out that the right side was crooked and that the photo I was using as a reference was taken from the side of the house and so the perspective was off. I hadn’t studied the photo hard enough. So thank you for letting me realize that, as a beginner in watercolor, I need to mark my reference photo in order to see the perspective of the building. Your instructions are right on. Thank you so much Amy for sharing your knowledge.

Amy did a fantastic job! She says what she would be thinking out and about sketching. Great info for a beginner and a knowledgeable student who wants to remind himself of the fundamentals. I have another course by Amy and will be signing up for yet another. She brings out the best in me!

I liked the way you explained the different perspectives, the wet on wet and different step from pencil to watercolor. It really makes sense when you demonstrate it, also it is harder than you show. Thank you for the lesson. I really enjoyed it!

Can't see what she is drawing and then she kept saying that thing and this thing instead naming the objects she is drawing. very disappointed

I am really enjoying this course. It's helping to filter out extraneous detail and focus on the feel of the scene. I find it helps with other drawings as well!
