What you will learn

By the end of the course, you will be able to sketch user interfaces, user flows, ui animations and storyboards.

You will understand that you don’t need any artistic skills, sketching is about generating and communicating ideas.

This course is also a great starting point for other areas of visual thinking, like graphic facilitation or sketchnoting.

Description

You will learn how you can boost your UX, UI or product design workflow with sketching.

Last update: 25th January 2023 - 4 new files added (UI sketching and Storyboarding Pro Tips posters)

Update:  16th November 2019 - new lecture added: 12 Benefits of Sketching for UX - a summary

Update: 17th October 2017 - new course material added: the Sketching for UX Designers WORKBOOK (24-page long, filled with useful sketching exercises)

Update: 5th June 2017 - new section added: a 40-minute long sketching practice activity through the different Gestalt principles.

The three main parts are

  1. Warming up and drawing basic shapes

  2. Sketching User Interfaces, User Flows and UI Animations

  3. Creating Storyboards.

Not only will I invite you to draw along with me throughout the course, I will also give you exciting exercises to quickly develop your skills.

You will be able to use your sketching skills in many more UX design or service design methods, like in creating Empathy Maps, User Journey Maps and Personas.

In addition, the course provides a great starting point for other areas of visual thinking, like graphic facilitation or sketchnoting, since in the section about Storyboarding I show you how to draw people, locations, objects, how to express process, use containers, color and effects, and so on.

Sketching skills are great for any product design process, but next to applying these skills in your professional workflow, you can improve your personal development as well for example by sketchnoting UX talks or podcasts.

Throughout the course I use pen and paper, so it won't provide you a complete workflow for using digitzier tablets for sketching, but I believe that almost everything I teach you can be applied for sketching on a tablet, so feel free to draw along with me or practice sketching with a digital tool.

Sketching is great because

  • this technique takes into account how our visual perception works - when we look at images, we understand them much faster than we read words;

  • it can reveal things we might have not seen before, connections we have not noticed;

  • it enables a mutual understanding;

  • it supports the fail fast approach;

  • it is a quick and cheap way to generate many ideas.

Important: This course is not about teaching how to use Sketch App by Bohemian Coding, but about sketching user interfaces with pen and paper!

It was a really cool, interesting, and motivating course. I liked that it wasn't just a dry story, but the teacher told everything by drawing, illustrating what she was talking about, and thus connecting the theory with what is being taught :)

Course delivered what promised. Interesting and useful to gain understanding or some skills of the topic.

A list of tools to purchase - even better a kit to go a long with the course OR a complete kit of the Author's favourite tools accumulated after many years of experience (and why they were chosen plus possible alternatives maybe) so you can work along USING EXACTLY the same tools and then from there we could form our own opinions of what we would prefer at the end of the course. This is great for people whom are REALLY starting from scratch and are not confident.

This is the most fun I've had watching a course. I am a very visual learner, I enjoyed watching all of her pen strokes when she was describing the lesson.

Definetely a good match for me this course! I am very excited about learning the rest of it, I am absolutely convinced that sketching is a useful tool in a UX designer kit.

Really enjoyed this course! Following along with a piece of paper and then looking back at my previous sketches really showed how I improved throughout the course.

This course really got me to put my pen to paper and sketch. As emphasized in the course, practice is key. I really enjoyed all of the exercises. I wish there were more of them - doing exercises was more useful for me than copying the exact things shown on the screen. I wasn't always sure when I should be drawing vs just watching.

Difficult speech to follow. Very slow-paced, flat tone of voice that makes it unengaging, difficult to follow; thinned with intuitive and obvious notions. Maybe it's for absolute beginners. There's something valuable though here and there, but it is not worthed the time it requires to be completed, not even skimming through. Considering the relevant content this course should last 2hrs max.

I learned a few valuable things, but this course took me a very long time to complete due to the way the content was presented. I wanted to sketch my notes similarly to how the content was sketched on the screen, but sometimes the sketches were not enough for me to remember the information, so I needed to write notes in addition to the sketches. It just was a difficult format for me to follow personally.

The course is great and very much informative. But it is necessary to say that it is also highly immersive so it can take quite a while to complete. Nevertheless, the instructor and content delivery are AMAZING. Highly recommend it for those who wish to develop visual thinking skills and techniques.

This course is exactly what I need now in my budding UI/UX design career. I recommend it for anyone who, like me, got stuck at some point trying to sketch an aspect of a product they're trying to create. It is detailed, clear, concise and very easy to assimilate considering the fact that the instructor mostly used visuals to convey important messages. Great value for the small amount it was priced at.

Overall the concepts are helpful and easy to follow. However, the delivery is pretty bland (not dynamic or entertaining). It is dry from start to finish. Still, very informative and logical. Talks more about UI than UX, but covers the essentials of storyboards.
