Why take this course?

Don't get lost in videos that try to cover too much and lose focus! This course will demonstrate how to create a simple game-ready asset with 3D Coat. Students will learn to create the asset from scratch that can be used in various game engines. The process will entail planning, blocking out forms, sculpting details, retopology, UV unwrapping, projection, painting and baking textures, exporting the asset, and then importing the asset into a couple of popular game engines (E.g. UDK and Unity). As a bonus, I've also included a short video covering how to bring the asset into Marmoset for easier creation of beauty shots.

To get to know a little about the workflow with 3DCoat it's fine. It is outdated and the video quality is 720p.

I fumbled my way through the tutorial, I'm new to 3D Coat, but familiar with Blender (Barelyintermediate), Sketch up (Expert) and Sculptris (Expert). Unfortunately these videos are still using Materials and Masks, which no longer exist... Stencils are similar, but not quite the same, the default "masks" are now different, so you cannot follow along and do what he does, worse he states he's going to do something, without explaining how you do it, where it's located, if there is a hot key involved. So I found myself constantly pausing, rewinding and trying to reverse engineer what he did to get to where he is, but since this is a newer version and the interface has changed it's not exactly easy. If you had some familiarity with the software prior and were using the same version as the instructor it would probably be fine, however I'm a complete beginner at 3D Coat and what was suppose to be a 2 hour course took about 7 1/2 hours and in the end I still couldn't get the paint to behave properly and I have no idea why. There is a stripe on the back that is well within the Retopo, the voxel has it as a simple flat surface, but for whatever reason baking it results in a triangle polygon that is super bright and will not take the material texture at all. Really though the worst part was the Retopo partition, I wasn't sure if I'm to be making the boxes hug the existing voxel art, or be bigger than, how the inner / outer shell capture is suppose to work, etc. Only in the next section, outside of the Retopo section does he mention that it's important to have the shell stand outside of the mesh by a decent margin. He just said, "Play around with it until you don't have black spots." Well that playing around took over 2 hours! Anyway, I found the class to be a bit helpful, but overall it needs more detail / explanation on the instructor's actions, needs to use a newer version of 3D Coat to really be useful.
