Instructor Info

Emiel Sleegers always had love for video games and when he was young, he started using Unity3D for programming but he found himself gravitating more towards the art of making games. Now he is currently working as an environment artist in Ubisoft. He contributed to creating AAA games such as Forza Horizon 3 and The Division 2. His all time favorite game is The Last of Us and that video game is what inspired him to want to work in the game industry. His advice for beginner artists is to focus on one aspect of gaming that they are passionate about, stick to it and get better at it. His hobbies include anything related to games or films, whether it be working on personal projects, freelance work or going out for movies.

Course Info

In this course, you will be taken to the process of creating an assault rifle from start to finish.  The goal of this course is to have a complete game ready AAA weapon. You will begin by gathering references that will help you visualize the weapon and then move on to 3Ds Max to model the high poly asset, the low poly and create UV map. You will be able to prepare the scene for baking and will set all the required maps in Marmoset Toolbag. You will go to Substance Painter where you will be creating the final texture and finally you will be rendering your art piece in Marmoset Toolbag.

The teacher makes many mistakes as he is modeling. He doesn't realize why he is making these mistakes. I understand making mistakes and fixing them is helpful to show what can go wrong but the problem is he doesn't know why these mistakes are happening or that he has even made a mistake until he needs to fix it. He does a poor job of teaching. I often just did things in a different way than he was because I felt the way he was modeling wasn't good and would lead to many mistakes.

Information is good. You can learn specific things. But most of the videos are timelapse because you always do the same things(Uv, retopo). If you are a beginner I will not recommend it. If you have experience and looking for workflow, this course will help you.

The instructor went into so much detail with every little thing, which was very helpful. Before this course I was struggling to figure out how to make props and guns. This course taught me a lot. I am very thankful.

Emiel Sleegers is a great teacher and shows you professional tips on how to achieve good results in difficult geometry and in general how to use 3ds max. I like that he is one of the only teachers that models weapons and actually shows you what reference he's looking at. This tutorial helped up my skin making game and enjoy the fact he makes mistakes and shows you how to solve them instead of rehearsing how to make a perfect model and kill your confidence in a split second.

UPDATE: I just accepted my first 3D modeling job! I only completed the modeling portion on here. I learned how to bake/paint with the FlippedNormals content. This was the tutorial that started my journey into 3D. No idea if you read these reviews Emiel, but I just wanted to come back and say... Thank you for helping me reach my career goal, this course taught me the basics and has really boosted my progress since then. It really means a lot man! ----------------------- My only complaint is that the audio is extremely quiet. Have to turn it up to 11 to hear. I would recommend downloading PureRef (Free) to have the provided reference up while you're working on this also.

He explains everything very well both in terms of what to do and why he was doing it the way he is. Clear and concise. The baking and texturing section in particular have been incredibly helpful for me.

Definitely a great match so far, since I am trying to learn more about the PBR pipeline and making realistic props to help me create in the industry.

The pieces on Marmoset were somewhat helpful. As for the actual modeling section, a lot of the "problems" that the teacher repeatedly mentioned and seemed surprised somehow that they were happening were just because of poor modeling technique. If you're needing a tutorial about texturing and baking, just grab the modeling assets (or make your own in half the time), and skip to the baking and texturing section. This is dangerous to show to people who are just beginning modeling because you may end up teaching them some very unfortunate habits.
