What you will learn

Read, write, and pronounce all 40 Korean vowel and consonant letters

Read, write, and pronounce basic Korean words

Why take this course?

Learn the basic structure, shapes, and sounds of the Korean alphabet!

There are 40 letters in Hangul (the Korean alphabet). This course will teach you all of them along with their shapes and sounds. No previous Korean knowledge necessary!

This is a quote unquote crash course in Hangul. Even if you have zero experience with Hangul, or Korean in general, this course will guide you step-by-step as you learn to identify, write, and pronounce the letters of Hangul. In this course, you will learn how simple it is to write in Korean while learning the sounds each character makes.

Tested by History

Prior to the 1440's, Korean was only read and written in complicated chinese characters (hanja) making it very difficult for anyone outside of high-class individuals to become literate. In 1446, King Sejong The Great announced the creation of a simpler alphabet (Hangul) to try and fix that problem. His goal for creating the new alphabet was to make it easy enough for anyone to learn to read and write Korean in the matter of a few hours. That's exactly what he did and that's exactly what we intend to do in this course.

Content and Overview

You will begin your journey with a brief history of Hangul and an overview of the structure of Korean words. Once you have a basic understanding of how Korean is structured, we will learn the 10 basic vowel letters and 14 basic consonant letters. After that, we will learn the 5 double consonants and 11 compound vowels.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to properly write and structure these letters to form words. It is crucial that you write each character on your own and practicing the pronunciation as we go along. Doing so will help you master each one faster and make it easier when we learn to read and write a few fun words in the final section.

Personalized Help

As the leader of this course, I understand I have a great responsibility for the learning of my course participants. I take that responsibility seriously and will work hard to see that all of your questions are answered to your satisfaction. It is my goal to answer any question you ask within 24 hours. At the end of the course, there is also a section dedicated to answering your questions where I can answer with a video if necessary.

Remember, at the end of the course you will be able to read and write basic words in Korean!

Throughout the course there are supplementary documents that you can use to further your study of Hangul. If you take this serious, you will find yourself with a newly acquired skill in Korean in a matter of hours! Let's get going!

This course is great! My husband is Korean and my in-laws don't speak English so I've been trying really hard to learn. I have tried a couple courses and this one was the most helpful for learning the alphabet/reading and writing. I love how it is organized!

I am far more grounded in the basic sounds of the vowels and consonants which makes it easier to look at a Korean word and render an approximation of that word. I am not hesitant to write the characters to form words. This language truly has been designed for speed of learning to read and write. Thank you for that. I need to study and practice much more.

I have tried to learn the alphabet with native speakers before. This presentation is very helpful because he relates the alphabet to sounds English speakers use (American English).

Pretty good course for a non native Korean speaker. I double checked all the pronunciations after each lesson with my Korean girlfriend and it all seemed pretty accurate. Thanks Braden, really helpful!

I chose this lecture for learning how to teach Korean to foreigners in my company. As a native speaker, this lecture is strongly recommended for first Korean alphabet learner.

This was a good start to reading and writing Hangul but I wish there was more on pronunciation than there was.

The course was a great way to learn the Korean characters but the characters were simplified to English equivalents without further direction on pronunciation.

Course was very well structured and you are not only shown stroke order of the symbols but how they would sound roughly in english to aid with pronouciation learning, something you would normally struggle with doing an online course!

I like how this course is short and straight to the point as it helps me concentrate better. Also the tutor responds to comments and questions, and explains things well.

First and foremost, Braden is hilarious. Which makes learning Hangul FUN. For many who wince at the mere memory of past language classes, that in itself is a rather foreign concept. Braden's lessons are simple, clear, easy to understand, and just plain fun. He is the kind of teacher I wish I had years ago, back in high school, when learning another language was more horrifying than math class. (I'm keeping everything crossed that he may one day offer another course on how to speak Korean. I'd sign up in a flash.) Kamsahamnida!
