What you will learn

How to choose a simple subject for your first travel sketch

How to measure and draw a basic building or landscape scene

How to add details with ink

How to use simple watercolor to bring your scene to life

Why take this course?

Join me on a sketching trip in beautiful, lively Guanajuato, Mexico! A travel sketchbook is a great way to capture a vacation, and it's a wonderful excuse to explore and observe when you're traveling. Whether you're an experienced artist or a beginner, this class will show you how to travel with art supplies and create quick sketches on the go.

We’re going to start with a simple building façade, and learn how to recognize familiar shapes and fit them together.

Building facades are a great place to start, because you don’t have to think about the rules of perspective just yet.

With a little simple measuring, you can get all the elements in place and have some fun with ink and watercolor.

Then we’ll zoom in and paint a charming, colorful old door, complete with peeling paint, ancient stones, and the other details that are so fun to capture in a sketchbook.

Finally, we’ll take a similar approach to a very basic landscape.

All three of these subjects have something in common: Once you’ve learned the basics of how to identify the big shapes, measure, and arrange them on the page, the rest comes pretty easily.

That’s why this is the best way to begin travel sketching.

And Guanajuato, Mexico is a beautiful place to start!

I actually sit down most of the time and set my art stuff out. But I've mainly sketched locally. But this way of being prepared is really useful information. Because Amy mentioned actual brand names of her materials, I was able to look them up and search for them online. Most products I was able to find and this is really useful information! She is so frank and open that it makes me want to go out and sketch right away!

Easy to follow and get started. Step by Step instructions take the intimidation factor out, and allow the student to just get in there.

Loving this instructor! Her tip with doing relative size/perspective to block out the shapes has been such a game changer. My shapes went from lumpy to recognizable! I’m also noticing my eye for light and shadows improving as I’m trying out the exercises. I have felt much braver using bold colors with my watercolors. I’m a serious newbie and I feel so empowered to go out and try to sketch out places in my real life already. Love this course!

Great overview of supplies and how she uses them - actually seeing how they function and her process is a bonus.

Taking a long summer trip with relaxed pace. Excited to try some sketching and simple watercolor in the field vs always waiting until I get home to do a painting of one of my photos. Looking forward to trying these ideas!

Informative. The composition of the lector excludes the materials she is referring to. It would be more effective if those are included in the view when she discusses them.

I love how the class is broken down and easy to follow. I also like how there is an emphasis on imperfection! I'm inspired to go out and just try.

Great first time travel sketching course so far. She goes over all her supplies and why she uses them I lover her style of teaching. I can follow along or stop the video and catch up. She give just enough instruction without "filling" the audio with unnecessary information.

Very well explained, easy to follow and to draw along although I'm a newbie. Amy keeps on cutting through complexity and gives you lots of content in a digestible way. It's my 3rd class with Amy and I can only recommend her courses.

Loved the lesson on doors! They’re one of my favorite things to photograph, as well as paint. The inking technique is perfect for doors. Thank you so much for sharing your talents.

This course is a great match for a beginner urban sketcher. Every section was covered in such a way that by pausing the video I could easily follow along. The pens, paints, and brushes she uses in the class handout and the explanations as to why she uses each one is clear. I used only a Micron pen, HB pencil, and Koi Water Colors with the water brush that came with the paints and still, I'm pleased with the projects I completed. The main reason I chose this particular class was I saw the projects covered Guanajuato, a city I've visited twice. I remembered the vivid colors there and was hoping to learn more about using my new Pocket Field Sketch Box set of Koi Water Colors. However, Amy Stewart awakened in me a new interest in pen sketching and I'm eager to acquire some of the pens she mentions. Thanks very much. I enjoyed the course and learned a lot.
