What you will learn

PowerPoint for Scientific and Technical Presentations

Why take this course?

Hello! This course is PowerPoint 101 for Scientists and Medical Writers. We have brought you this course so that you can achieve maximum impact with your own or someone else's scientific presentations.

This course was created for anyone who needs to create PowerPoints or slide decks with scientific content in them, whether you are creating them about your own research or for a client. We will talk about multiple aspects of creating a PowerPoint, from key tools within the program to general design rules for creating compelling, easy-to-understand graphs and tables.

Although we are focusing on PowerPoint, many of the strategies we discuss will also apply to other presentation tools, such as Keynote and Prezi.

You may be thinking that there are many courses on PowerPoint already, including several on Udemy, but THIS course is geared specifically towards scientists, researchers, graduate students and professors in sciences, healthcare professionals, and medical writers, who need to create effective SCIENTIFIC presentations.

For medical writers in particular, we are in the business of clearly communicating scientific information, and if you are able to do this effectively in PowerPoint, you will become a go-to resource for your clients when it comes to creating slide decks. It's lucrative work, and you are likely to quickly end up with more work than you can handle—this is a good thing, right?

This course has four sections:

  • PowerPoint basics, including inserting slide elements, arranging and aligning elements, and working with templates and master slides so that you can work as efficiently as possible.

  • Slide Design. This is what sets our course apart, because we really focus on how to deal with complex SCIENTIFIC data by using builds and other strategies.

  • Graphs and Tables, teaching you how to present data in a visually appealing and understandable format, including how to redraw graphs for maximum effect.

  • Case Study. We go step-by-step through a case study to show you how a typical scientific presentation can be recreated for maximum impact.

This course also includes several opportunities where you can get feedback from us and your peers.

Anyone who regularly has to create technical or scientific presentations will benefit from this course. Perhaps you…

  • Write manuscripts professionally as a medical writer, but don't quite have the confidence to offer slide deck creation to your clients. This course will give you all the information you need to start doing that.

  • Are a graduate student, postdoc, or professor and are going to be giving an important presentation to your peers and advisors or at a large conference. The time spent in this course learning how to communicate your findings clearly will pay off several fold in terms of creating a great impression.

  • Teach science or medicine as a teacher, professor, or guest lecturer, and need help making compelling and interesting presentations.

  • Are already competent in creating effective PowerPoints and you just want to level up and create the best presentations possible with efficiency.

This course is a must-take for professors, researchers, scientists, doctors, medical writers, and anyone else who creates these types of slide decks. Your audience will thank you! All you need is a rudimentary knowledge of PowerPoint to get started as well as the need to create impressive scientific presentations. Just click on the link to enroll. I look forward to seeing you in the course!

Please note: the different versions of Powerpoint vary slightly, so some things might be different depending on which operating system and version you use. We use PowerPoint for Mac, but most of the tools translate to Windows well. One notable difference is that Master Slide is not present on the Web-based Office 365 version of PowerPoint.

I got a lot of tips and good advice from this class, since I was already familiar with most aspects of PPT. I would not recommend it for a complete beginner who has never used PPT (don't be fooled by it being called "101"). But it's great to add to the knowledge of someone who is already intermediate in PPT, and nice to see it presented with science/medical info in mind.

Good. When switching from one presenter to the other the audio changed. If you want a hands-free option you will barely hear the second.

I have used PowerPoint a lot when I was teaching high school, and in this first lesson, I have learned several new things. I was not aware of SmartArt!

Great course to build skills and take my presentations to the next level. The course starts at a very basic level and builds from there, but does include aspects on slide design that I never learned on my own. Worthwhile investment of the time and money.

This course not only familiarizes new PowerPoint users with basic tools and features, but also provides more experienced users with tips and tricks to improve presentations. Highly recommended if you create slide decks with graphs and figures, or just want to make your presentations more visually appealing.

Hands down one of the best courses I've taken online. The exercises and feedback from the instructor make this course appealing. I would definitely recommend taking this course. It's one of a kind.

I thought I knew a fair amount about how to use PowerPoint for presentations, but this course is a jam-packed 3+ hours of intense learning. Although designed specifically towards a scientific audience, the instructors cover design principles and storytelling strategies, which can be applicable in non-scientific presentations as well. It is particularly helpful to see the videos of how the slides can be improved and also to have the exercises to follow along with the training. This course will transform the way you design your PowerPoint presentations in the future.

Excellent course for both beginners AND experienced users of PowerPoint. I continually create presentations for my work, but this course has given them a complete make-over. My presentations now have that sophisticated/marketing look while still being scientific.

This course was very well done. I really enjoyed the opportunity to practice and get feedback, which was timely and helpful. I've used Powerpoint for a really long time and there was still so much I learned. The outside resources for design were very helpful too!

I've been using PowerPoint for Scientific presentations since forever, but my slides were rather drab. This course is helping me make them more professional and more visually appealing.

Great course! Highly recommended for medical writers and scientists/presenters. It covers a lot of helpful information about how to make PowerPoint presentations effective and shows how to use the tools step by step. After taking the course I realized that my prior PowerPoint skills were more basic than I previously thought:) I learned a lot through this course and I'm glad I completed it.

Over the years I have prepared several powerpoint presentations for teaching purposes. Looking back I used plain boring text and bullets with no variations. I wish I had just this introductory information back then. But, on to newer tasks and writing now. The course presented useful guidance about how to manage production of a slide deck in PowerPoint. The only draw back has to do with the fact that there are so many versions of PowerPoint. The course uses the Mac version. Not all of the features in Mac Powerpoint are available in the Windows version. Nonetheless, the basic steps are presented and with a little effort, it is easy to transpose the information presented into the version of PowerPoint used by the student. Anyone who plans on using PowerPoint will benefit from this course.

This is helping me very much. I received feedback on a powerpoint I created in December from Dr. Hitt and Dr. Martin. This course is helping me to make that presentation polished and more professional.

Yes, I thought I new PPT pretty well, but I've already learned some new and cool ways to use it! If you're a medical writer or scientist who wants to up your messaging and design game and create exceptional presentations, you'll definitely want to invest the time in this PowerPoint course.
