VMware PowerCLI

VMware PowerCLI is a collection of PowerShell modules providing many cmdlets to manage a wide range of VMware products. It allows IT Pros to not only perform most vSphere administrative tasks but also automate them.

Take a chunky vSphere cluster made up of 50 nodes for instance, in which you need to make a change to detach one or more LUNs on all of them. You could either spend a few hours making the change on each host manually in the vSphere Client, or you can use PowerCLI to execute the change on all the nodes in a matter of minutes. Granted such change must be performed carefully if you know what you are doing.

Pushing changes to hosts or VMs isn’t the only benefit VMware PowerCLI brings to the table. You can also use it to collect data that is relevant to a specific use case in a single place. There are ready to use scripts available such as Alan Renouf’s vCheck that acts as a framework to email HTML reports based on what you want to keep an eye on. This script is backed by VMware themselves.

Automation always was a crucial part in IT operations and was introduced into its own category since the exponential gain in traction by solutions like Terraform. VMware PowerCLI and PowerShell becoming more advanced with each release, we are able to automate more and more. PowerCLI also provides integration with applications like vRealize Operations, NSX, VSAN, Horizon, VMware Cloud platforms

The videos were not edited very well. The volume varies from one part to another. Recording quality is not consistent. The instructor made mistakes which are usually edited out. I've seen better tutorials on Youtube for free.

No proper editing, lot of spelling and pronunciation mistakes, and it didn't covered much detail of PowerCLI instead more focus was on how to create file, etc rest of the content

The videos were not edited very well. The instructor made lots of mistakes which are usually edited out. I've seen better tutorials on Youtube for free with much higher quality in that respect.

It's okay. The method to install the PS module failed for me and should have included (IMO) the manual zip file method that VMware has on their site. Spent way too much time troubleshooting the class, not enough time learning. Also, the instructor doesn't use consistent configurations across the training which could be very confusing for some. I'm happy I took good notes as I was building. Also, the environment build process was kludgey due to the apparent lack of rehearsal\scripting on the instructor's part. After getting through building the environment, I had further issues. I would not recommend this unless you already have a test\lab environment already created and working. Troubleshooting all the issues I encountered with setting up the environment and getting powercli installed, while an education in itself, was more frustrating and time consuming than it was useful.

I learnt the basics of PowerCli, bit disappointing that only 1 host was used/available to run the scripts against since this was trying to show us the usefulness in environments with multiple Hosts. (3 Hosts would be enough)
