What you will learn

Analyze design of organizations around them.

Solve basic challenges regarding authority and control in organizations.

Recognise various organizational structures.

Why take this course?

One of the most basic building blocks of organizational success is appropriate organizational design. What do we mean by that? It is the design of authority and responsibility. One should always know who is his/her manager and who are the subordinates. But is it that easy?

In the first part of the course, we will talk about basic challenges in organizational design, which are mostly about finding the right balance. Hence, we will try to belance centralization vs decentralization, mechanistic vs organic structure, and standardization vs mutual adjustment. This approach states that all of the previously mentioned balance choices should be tailored to the sources of uncertainty that our organization is facing.

In the second part of the course we will lay focus on the design of authority in organizations. We will talk especially about tall hierarchies - which are the ones with many organizational levels. These can have serious problems as will be displayed in Parkinson´s Law Problem.

Finally, we will get to concrete organizational structures that our organization can understake. We will begin with the most basic functional structure which later on evolves to one of divisional structures. We will cover the main ones here as each posseses specific characteristics. After all, we will bring some interesting ones such as network, hybrid or network structure. Looking forward to see you inside!

The material should be advertised as an introductory class to organizational design since it does a great job at introducing the concepts. It’s purely theoretical so far, with no actual operational teachings.

Good and useful, a bit basic level of information. Sometimes important details are missing (the trainer says the he doesn't remember the numbers correctly). But overall is OK.

Pls talk about department, and also give sample real organization structure. Not only theory, because in real situation this is only very basic.

I guess I came in at a higher lever and was looking more for design characteristics than the different types of structures. Also, would be nice for the Resources is the system explained the type of file it is rather than me having to Open With different programs until I found one that will open it

I am new to organizational design, though familiar with the basics as a project manager. The course refreshed a lot of the basics and also helped me understand how organization structure evolves as the company size increases and what criteria helps determine what the new organization structure must look like.

The course though well delivered,is essentially meant for beginners or casual hobbyists and not seasoned OD practitioners. I would have appreciated more in depth case studies with detailed evaluations of why some structures would work well in a given context against others. Exercises which pose a greater test of one's knowledge , are also something I'd highly recommend. I would rate the content at 3 stars. The additional half-star is because of the instructor's prompt replies to queries. Looking forward to additions/extensions of the course. Cheers.

The course shares valuable information in a way that's easy to understand. It's very helpful that the course is split up in different videos. There's only a couple of typo's on some of the slides.

Even though this course comes off as a bit old fashioned with the drawings on the black board I still experience great learning. The course is slow enough to let me think each topic through and detailed enough to give med new knowledge. Give it a go! You will experience that theory can be made relevant.

The best part about the course is the dynamic on screen content. It really helps to visualize and anticipate the next move. The author explains the concepts really well with simple examples that are easy to remember. Then there are "resources available" images up for download within the course that can give you a quick glimpse of what you have learnt. It is a must learn course for business consultants, entrepreneurs and human resource professionals.
