This complexity even increases further when you have same 11g standalone database with data guard and ASM configured.

  • Talk about different types of upgrade methods inside Oracle database
  • Upgrade GRID + ASM from 11g to 12c on primary and standby
  • Upgrade Oracle from 11g to 12c on primary and standby
  • Maintain databases in sync even after upgrade is finished

The course is alright, but it has a few flaws compared to other courses by Mr Kumar. The first and biggest issue is the Practice Environment setup. Specifically, there are a number of steps missing that can absolutely throw students for a loop and waste hours of their time if they aren't prepared: -No mention that an RMAN catalog database needs to be created and setup -No mention of setting up Data Guard Broker and the associated DGMGRL utility -Removing the +DATA standby redologs from proddb_st took more then just a SWITCH LOGFILE command on the primary as described; since you can't directly switch standby redologs, the entire group had to be dropped and recreated All of the above required extensive searching on the internet to find instructions. Although a good DBA should have the skills required to find this info, considering that this is just setting the environment up for the class, I find it disappointing that the setup instructions were not thorough enough to cover these issues. Second, although the instruction is great, it would have been far better to have access to the lab notes like in other classes Mr Kuman has made available. The quick references have been very useful for ongoing practice for me, and I'm again saddened that I don't have those here. Finally, although the class is somewhat useful, its utility is rapidly waning as 12.1 is scheduled to be made obsolete by Oracle at this time. In order to get the most of this class, I used them as a high-level overview of the process and converted everything to 12.2 (which can then easily be upgraded to 18+ later). I would like to request that Mr. Kumar revisit this course and update it for 12.2 as soon as possible so it will still have relevance. All is not lost, however: aside from the missing environment setup steps, converting his lessons to 12.2 isn't too difficult, and the lesson still works to explain the high-level concepts and upgrade process at a sky level. Mr. Kumar himself is very knowledgeable on the subject and brings additional information to the table besides just the step-by-step, so you walk away feeling you understand the internal process better. Overall, it's good for what it is, but it's definitely not his best presentation.

The course was easy to follow, based on real life scenarios and straight to the point. However it seems that the part where the dataguard broker needed to be put back online is missing. There is also some material which is missing from the downloads section; the labs from 26-29 which are needed to be able to follow through. A wrap up summary of the steps covered for the Prod environment is also missing, detailing the steps required to complete the upgrade. Overall I would highly recommend this course to fellow dbas to get a better understanding of the steps needed to perform such upgrades.

The course should have the configuration for stanby . And later after the upgrade of the primary we didnt see as the standby database is upgraded and how the redo logs are shipped on to stanby database. Please take care on the above comments.

Instructor has done all steps during and upgrade and shared his experience. This video is very useful to watch before starting the upgrade to avoid any mistakes that may cost you more time and effort.

This course is very basic. The course doesnt show how to upgrade using a Data Guard configuration. There are several methods to minimize downtime by utilizing a Data Guard configuration in different upgrade scenarios, but none of these are part of the course.

I really liked this instructor. He explains the theory as he is doing it - meaning he does the drawings with you. He give examples of all the different layouts for an upgrade and walks you through each step for DG and ASM. I'm very happy I choose this course. I need to upgrade for my job and have not done one in years.
