Oil Painting Techniques; Vermeer

This is hands down the best art course I've ever taken. I've finished with a beautiful copy of the original that astounds everyone that sees it. I wish I could get back my tuition at the academy of fine arts. I learned far more from this instructor in a fraction of the time. The skills I've learned have transformed my practice. The instructor has gone above and beyond, presenting scientific analysis of Vermeer's painting and how he achieved it, showing us the exact pigments and methods, how to source them, or the modern equivalents for those who don't want to dive that deep. The student follows him every step of the way to "recreating" this masterpiece. This might be tedious for some, but this type of painting is not for people who want quick results, as it takes days of work to produce a painting like this. I would recommend a background in classical drawing and some painting before taking this course, or you may not get the most out of the information presented. I wish there was an option for students to upload their work, because that would be the best review. Thank you Louis!!!!!!!!!!!

Learned a lot about materials and techniques, having made previous attempts to reproduce vermeer paintings

He's very clear, I have never been sure I understood the transition from the dead layer to the velatura and he showed it so well. There was actually so much here that I am going to rewatch it soon.

I'm reaching the end of section 5 and so far I am enjoying it. I would like to mention though that so parts of the girls face are incorrectly rendered. In particular the tip of the nose and chin. It is a little astonishing that the instructor has not noticed the big picture. He seems to have concentrated too much on precision around the eyes but has not notice the inaccuracies of the nose and the chin. In Vermeer's painting the underside of the nose tip is pointing upward and is more angular in shape, while the tip of the nose in the instructors painting is more bulbous and the tip is angled downward. The bottom edge of the chin in Vermeer's painting is more angular while in the intructors painting the tip of the chin is quite rounded and very dainty looking. Therefore I think some of the girl's likeness is missing in the instructor's painting. Anyways I am definitely enjoying watching the process.

So far superbe course, only the quality of the audio can be a little better. The amount of knowledge you can pick up from this course is insane!

Both this course and the one on Rembrandt are superb! Luis is a master and the information included in these videos cannot be found any where else, unless you read 20 different books. Love it. Keep doing more course, Mr. Borrero.

The teacher shows a great combination of passion and skills and have the ability to pass these on to his students.

Vermeer, is one of my go to masters when it comes to indoor compositions. He painted this model more then once. According to my sources her name is Ragazza, This painting is titled "Ragazza con Turbante" in my book. He also painted "Ragazza Con Velo", Ragazza Con Flauto, and Ragazza Con Capello Rosso. What is of interest to me is the amount of interest given this particular painting, and not the other more complex compositions he painted. I think the amount of research done to produce this lesson is astronomical and I appreciate the work and the attempt to recreate a masters brush stroke. Even though I'm not convinced that anyone knows the exact process Vermeer or any other Old Master actually employed. this is perhaps the best that has been attempted. I am enjoying it and learning a lot from the dialog behind the strokes and their purpose.

This course is interesting for the historical, old master style of painting. It substitutes very well for an atelier live course.
