Description

What is this course about?

This course is about various memory techniques that can be used in consecutive interpreting to improve your performance and make interpreting less stressful.

When working as a consecutive interpreter one often has to memorise and recall long passages of speech, sometimes up to five minutes in duration. Experienced interpreters can deal with speeches that last up to ten minutes! How do they do this?

The most obvious answer is 'lucky them, they have great memory". However, a good memory is not always the answer. Even people with "ordinary" memory (that is, the majority of us) can achieve the same results by using various memory triggers and having good note-taking skills.

This course will provide:

  • a comprehensive overview of the techniques that you may find useful,

  • many examples of how to use these techniques,

  • a chance to practice the most common and useful memory techniques.

Who is this course for?

This course is for beginner interpreters and also interpreters with an intermediate level of experience, who want to further develop their interpreting skills and make interpreting better, easier and less stressful.

To help you use memory techniques in the most beneficial way, we will cover the following topics during this online workshop:

  • General information on how your memory works during interpretation;

  • Visual memory triggers, including the "Memory Palace" techniques

  • Narrative, logical, structural and combined triggers

  • The main principles of note-taking, including notes structure and the use of abbreviations and symbols.

How will you benefit from this Course:

  • you will improve your interpreting skills

  • you will find interpreting more fluent and enjoyable

  • you will learn the efficient use of memory triggers and note-taking techniques

I would have liked more exercises for the memory palace. Also, more examples and exercises for the internal triggers, as these were only explained.

The course is great and the teacher makes sure to speak in a clear, professional way all the time. There are very interesting resources in the course on both, memory triggers and note-taking techniques. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot and I'm sure that I'll be using what I have learned for my career as an interpreter. I did not like the way the final exam is carried out though. I found that all answers that are said to be "right" but it took me several attempts to realize that you should not select what you did in the exam but what you can do (which is basically anything that will help you interpret correctly). It was a bit frustrating because even though all the answers are correct, as an interpreter it is impossible and unnecessary to do all of them at the same time which would mean that the student must only tick one or two of them and not all. I believe that even though this is a minor problem, as a student, it disappoints me, making me feel like I have "failed" the course when I can see that it has made me improve and learn. There should be a more efficient way to test students in this particular type of skill.
