What you will learn

Understand the three main causes of progressive memory loss

Develop insights about toxins, lifestyle and genetic factors linked to memory problems

Learn remedies for reversing serious memory losses

Improve memory issues related to dementia.

Why take this course?

Master the basics about what goes wrong in our brains when memory problems develop.

Understand the three major causes of Alzheimer's disease. That is, inflammation from infections and poor diets or lifestyle habits. A decline and shortage of key nutrients as well as fewer hormones and a deficit of molecules that protect our brains. And, finally, toxic substances such as metals or biotoxins (i.e., poisons produced by microbes) from molds or contract with poisons in the environment.

Learn about the latest research on preventing and reversing cognitive decline. Learn about genetic predispositions. You can reverse even these influences, if you act early and take an aggressive stand against the changes. We will learn about the RECODE schema developed at UCLA. Memory issues are not inevitable. We will delve into the specific techniques and lifestyle strategies that researchers at a major research university are using to reverse early to mid-stage memory loss.

Take a cognitive assessment test to determine the status of your own memory. This test is known as MOCA or the Montreal Cognitive Assessment instrument. It enables you to: use your working memory to work through simple math challenges as well as recall common objects, verbal statements and to copy images. You will also work through alphabetical reversals, recall words with specific letter prompts and information about the current date and time. The entire assessment can be completed in as little as 15-20 minutes. There's an adjustment for one's level of education and a scale for determining where you score relative to the danger zone of true memory deficits. Get your results and know where you stand.

There's also information about the effects of stress (due to unemployment, divorce, family changes and sleep loss) as well as insulin resistance, metabolics and lack of activity on our capacity to recall information and data. Understand the various sorts of examinations (e.g., DNA tests) that can be undertaken to evaluate your performance across a range of areas.

Lots of information of what to do, what not to do, and why, as well as lifestyle choices that can lead to Alzheimer's. At times feels a bit overwhelming, similar to a list. (I'm not sure how I would change it, though.) Nevertheless, I got a lot of useful information to help my mom and also help me in prevention.

This course was very insightful and easy to follow. It starts with learning about how the brain affects memory. Then goes into the different factors that may attribute to the onset and progression of memory loss. I think the detail put into the ways of prevention highlights many different avenues of helping oneself. I think testing ones cognitive abilities is important for everyone to incorporate into their lives. I enjoyed this course and recommend others to give it a go.

I enjoyed watching this course. I felt as if I reviewed the material but with more depth. It felt great to pause and take my time understanding Alzheimer's disease. I also liked learning ideas on managing my memory. I will keep in mind the exercise with numbers so I can constantly keep my brain busy.

This course was informative and insightful, there were several causes that were mentioned in regards to memory problems. However the one that I found most enlightening was a person’s lifestyle. Experiencing high levels of stress from work or school may lead to memory problems. High levels of glucose and insulin may lead to blockage in the synapses leading to Alzheimer's. Lastly, toxins such as too little zinc or too high copper were a cause leading to developing memory problems. This information can be applied to a person’s daily life to improve or modify the lifestyle the person currently has. I think this course does a great job explaining the factors of how memory problems develop as well as providing solutions to either reduce or eliminate the rate at which memory problems develop.

Dr. Stohs has provided information that is helpful for individuals that are interested in learning about memory loss. In the videos, she mentioned that memory loss is caused by major neurocognitive disorder. She also included the causes for Alzheimer’s, how to prevent it, and different treatments for it. The first cause was genetics which is correlated to a bad inherited gene. The second cause is related to a toxin such as the exposure to mercury, certain metals, ticks, and so on. Lifestyle is the third cause of Alzheimer’s which includes poor diet, level of stress, sleeping deprivation, etc. Humans can use different memory test to determine whether their beloved has the disorder or not. And measure the severity of the disorder. One of the examinations that people can apply is called MOCA test. An example would be to do a simple calculation in their mind such as subtracting by six backwards from 100. Individuals can prevent memory loss by having a proper diet, taking supplements, exercising, and avoiding harmful chemicals. There are drugs at the counter individuals can purchase to help treat memory loss. Dr. Stohs was very specific and detailed in course. Overall, I have obtained a great amount of information from this course. I highly recommend students who are interested in memory loss to enroll!

I really enjoyed this course. I feel like everyone at some point in their lives will have to deal with memory problems whether it is themselves or their loved ones. One aspect I found very interesting about the course, was how mold can have a negative impact on our cognitive health. It amazes me what our brain can do, and I really enjoyed learning the causes of these memory problems and some remedies that I can start doing now to preserve my brain capacity as I get older. Other than some difficult material, Dr. Stohs did an amazing discussing the material and covering all aspects that people would be interested in learning about.

These videos were very informative and helped explain the causes, symptoms, and prognosis for memory loss disorders. The example provided in the second video really helped demonstrate the use of pneumonic devices for storing and later retrieving memories. I’ve taken biopsychology before so I really enjoyed the portions that explained the neuronal basis behind Alzheimer’s, for example the degeneration of amyloid-beta proteins in the brain. It would certainly be incredible if we could actually find a preventive drug to delay (or stop altogether) the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s in older populations, with the research produced from UCLA. I appreciate how you discussed a variety of causes because disorders are never just biological, or just environmental, and it is important to remember that. This series effectively explained all areas of Alzheimer’s in depth and is very useful for the upcoming exam!

I found this course very helpful because my great grandma had dementia and Alzheimer’s, so it was good to know the causes and risk factors for these diseases. I also found the memory cues portion interesting because I believe it could help certain people with memory problems remember things. When Dr. J started discussing the new UCLA research, I thought it was helpful that she explained the basic terms to have a better understanding of what the research was discussing. The video section called Lifestyle Causes of Memory Problems was interesting because I do not think that a lot of people know that their lifestyle can possibly affect their likelihood of getting dementia or Alzheimer’s. It was also helpful that she explained the different ways that the UCLA researchers have said can help with memory problems, since many people feel there are not many ways to prevent memory problems.

This course contained a good amount of information for college students that are specifically interested in the memory part of Psychology. There were plenty of examples on how to prevent illnesses as well as reversing memory problems. Although, the subject is difficult and challenging to grasp, the course did a decent job of going through the important details in an hour. In addition, the course gave me insight into how I can prevent memory problems in my own life. I learned that the 3 causes for memory loss are linked to lifestyle, genetics, and toxins. By the end of the course, I realized how memories are precious to an individual and should be preserved. Recommended for anyone who is interested in memory problems!

I think that the course has lots of good information that is fairly detailed and explained well. Very insightful lecture that gives many interesting facts and offers many great suggestions for countering/ preventing illness. This lecture has inspired me to try out some of the techniques with some of my family with hope tht it will help them in with their memory decline. However, the course seems to be a little dry and could use more visuals to boost the required level of concentration.

I felt as though this was quite an informative course that not only gave me the opportunity to learn about my own memories and how to maintain them but to understand how the brain works and how memory is stored. In the second lecture when we played the memory game with the numbers correlating to the fish, blue scarf, and car, kind of had me confused for a little bit but then I tried to relate those numbers to something I could remember specifically. For example, the first three numbers was the time I woke up, the next numbers would be written on the coffee beans I'd brew and the last numbers would be the house number in which I was in. This course not only was a course I'd recommend to people my age but those who are older as well to understand why they may be going through memory loss and how to take preventative measure to exercise and train the brain. I like how the lecture videos were short and concise, therefore I was able to pay attention and draw myself into the subject. This was the perfect course length with adequate information.
