Why take this course?

There’s one fundamental thing in music that you can learn which will immediately improve your music compositions.

Without buying the latest sample libraries, without spending months or even years analysing the minute details of music orchestration, and the best news is that you probably already know a little about it.

And that’s melody.

In this melodic music composition course, you’ll learn:

  • A tried and tested method for composing better melodies from scratch

  • How to compose a strong melody over an existing chord sequence

  • What makes a good melody

  • How to compose countermelodies

  • The scales and modes you can use to compose more interesting melodies

I’ve taught literally hundreds of students how to compose music in person, and thousands more online, and I’ve also won awards internationally for my own music, but when I first start teaching a new group of students about composing melody, they often think it doesn’t apply to them.

Maybe you’re into death metal and don’t view that as melodic?

Or perhaps you’re writing minimalist music built on patterns or chord sequences?

Well…here’s the thing: you’re still writing melodic music.

As Leonard Bernstein said: “where there’s music there’s melody, you can’t have one without the other”

I remember one student in particular, Jamie, who was really into rap so didn’t think melody had much to do at all with what he was composing. During our first lesson we sat together and analysed some of his favourite tracks and he went wide eyed, amazed at just how many melodic elements there were in music that he himself had thought wasn’t melodic. He went on to write some of the most intricate, and interesting hip hop music I’ve heard for a long time.

So melodic music writing isn’t about composing “old-fashioned” symphonies or cheesy pop songs. It’s about writing better parts for any type of music.

Whether you’re a music producer with little formal musical training, or a classically trained musician frustrated about why your music isn’t connecting, my course on melodic music is going to help you learn to bring your compositions to life.

When you enrol:

  • You'll get lifetime access to the music composition program, where I walk you through all of the steps I use to create better melodies.

  • You’ll learn what to listen for while analysing your favourite music, all of the building blocks that are used to put a melody together,

  • I'll teach you a number of methods of creating and developing a melody, working with harmony, and creating counterpoint.

Remember that you’re protected by a 30-Day-Money-Back-Guarantee, no hard feelings, just in case you discover that the course isn’t right for you.

So if you’re ready to take your music composing to a new level, and to put in the work to get you there, click the “Buy Now” button now to enrol today.

See you in the course!

P.S. it isn't your mixing holding you back, you don't need a new sample library, and you don't need to be a musical prodigy to write great melodies. You just need to know what makes a good melody and apply that to your own compositions.

Enrol today and I'll show you exactly how.

Good material that helped me approach composing in a different way than I had before. My one criticism is how often some things were said twice or more in a row. It kind of just made things repetitive. I use the transcripts and so this made it a bit tougher to follow along. Really good course overall, though.

This course added a clear process for Melodic design and Counterpart creation to other Melodic design classes from Udemy. A great course. Thank you Udemy.

This is a great tutorial on how to write better/strong melodies. It covers just enough theory, but also explains how to find that particular sound, and implement it in your writing. I have expanded my music writing toolkit learning from Jonathan.

Mmmmm...as a musician i will expect more. You've never mentioned why you choose certain intervals respect the others for the melody. You've never mentioned for example the nine, which is, in my opinion, a great starting point for creating an interesting melody. This is a good short course with some basic notions as countermelodies or other techniques you've mentioned. I've learned a way to create a melody, sure, by singing it with silly words, but it was too short as a whole.

This course has had two major impacts: It has provided a direction towards a solution to a problem I had with a composition I couldn't complete, and it has given me more creative tools and greater enthusiasm, so that my future compositions will start off in better condition.

I am very much enjoying the teaching skills of this instructor. He is clear, concise, and communicates the goal of the lesson in a well laid out manner. In the first session, the exercise assignment is pertinent and thought provoking. An exceptional teacher. I am looking forward to taking additional courses taught by this teacher!

The instructor has given me an incredible amount of knowledge. More so than any other course on composing. I am so pleased with this. There is so much fabulous instruction here that i will have to watch over and over again and compose while watching to internalize the principles. What a treasure!

I’ve really enjoyed this course and I was able to learn and apply what I’ve learned. However, I was expecting to see music notation instead of the DAW interface Jonathan uses. Nonetheless, I took that as opportunity to learn more about DAW which I found amazing. After this course, I searched for DAW software and found LMMS which is great. Thanks Jonathan! One thing I did not really enjoy, was the constant zoom in and zoom out during some of the videos. I will take the course again and will try to find more from the same author.

Awesome!Very dense information, plenty of useful tips. This course helped me to better understand the process of mu- sic composition, not just writng the melody. Highly recommended.Beware though that working knowledge of music theory is a must.

For an amateur with decades of experience, this finally made me think about understanding and building melodies in a structured way. Very eye-opening - thank you! One thing I would have hoped to have added to the course: writing a melody to existing lyrics. Although - creating a quick set of silly temporary lyrics to give structure was a neat trick.

This course provides a wealth of information on the many, almost technical details of melodies. It is comprehensive and well presented. Although this is a course on writing melodies, I would like more information on using modes with harmony. Also, I would like more analysis of the techniques using actual songs, as well as additional examples of motif and phrase development. Overall, a very good course.
