Why take this course?

RS-485 is the de facto workhorse of data communications in the field of plant automation.

It is very effective in applications with significant electrical interference (noise) requiring a long transmission distance. Thus, the standard is often used in industrial applications. It is as an inexpensive local area network (LAN) connection that allows multiple receivers to connect within a multi drop configuration. RS-485 does not include a communications protocol.

This course delivers the theoretical and practical aspects of RS-485 in a very effective way, so that at the end, you will be able to build, maintain and troubleshoot any RS-485 based network in the plan automation field. The course features a live physical connection between a PLC and a Computer via a USB-to-RS485 converter, an example that is key to effective troubleshooting of RS-485 systems.

After completing this course, you will be able to integrate devices from the same manufacturers and different manufacturers, that are RS-485 compliant, to form a complete seamless network.

This course is very comprehensive, but is geared to someone with know knowledge of serial transmission. It explains start, stop, and data bits, how asynchronous clocking differs from synchronous clocking, single-ended vs differential transmission, why twisted pair is effective in noise reduction, and finally getting to how two-wire RS-485 works. (I was a bit disappointed that it did not mention the less common 4-wire RS-485.) If you are familiar with RS-232 and asynchronous serial transmission, and just wanted to know how RS-485 differs from RS-232 or RS-422, you will find this course much too basic. If, on the other hand, you have not worked with RS-232, this course will tell you lots of stuff that you need to know.

One the one hand this course is designed quite simple to introduce that topic to absolute beginners, on the oher hand some better diagrams/sketches would have made it easyer to understand. For example: Just show the measurement of a logic analyzer to introduce the reason why a start bit and a stop bit is used and why the wrong setting of the baud rate will lead into a data mismatch.

So far, there is only one other lecturer that has videos as good as these ones. I rarely see people who not only make high quality presentations but actually go through the extra step to give examples and show how things are actually done. Excellent for anyone trying to get a process automation team together.

While the course just covers the fundamentals, I like the practical approach. Unfortunately, I was experiencing loads of streaming issues along the way, which, of course, is not a problem of this course itself. Sometimes, I feel the explanation a bit too redundant.
