What you will learn

By the end of this course, you will have full confidence using your DSLR to 100% of its potential, and you will be surprisingly far down the road in your personal journey as an artistic photographer of the natural world.

In this course, you will learn what you actually need to know about your DSLR in CAMERA CLASS, how to begin seeing Light in the PHOTOGRAPHY section, and how to continue learning for a lifetime in my PROBLEM SOLVING section.

Why take this course?

Paul's motivational JUMPSTART into the world of outdoor photography is a unique blend of practical hands-on lecture, ideas for creative inspiration, and Q and A from a live audience who asks the questions you want to know. Count on having a lot of fun learning from Paul's vibrant teaching style, and then get outside on your next adventure taking great photos!

This is an ongoing photography course, and you have lifetime access. New illustrations and assignments will be added to this course as it becomes available or as needed for explanation. If you have something you want to see, please don't hesitate to let me know. I am here to launch you as far as I can into this wonderful world of wilderness photography!

For those of you who don't have 6-weeks to sit in a boring classroom, we'll do it all in ONE DAY!

This course is for beginners who are serious about learning it right and in a tangible way the first time. This is not for casual shooters who just want to take a better snapshot of their family. This is for those who want to really be artists with their camera.

You will need to have your camera out in front of you. Be prepared to practice, practice, practice as the course progresses.

I deliver this time-tested Jumpstart course in three sections; CAMERA CLASS, PHOTOGRAPHY, and PROBLEM SOLVING.

- CAMERA CLASS: You have to learn this gadget before you can create those artistic masterpieces of this wild planet. Look forward to getting off of that pesky green Auto setting forever after this morning session.

- PHOTOGRAPHY: It's all about the Light, baby!

- PROBLEM SOLVING: After this section, “When you're photographing on your own, and there's no one to look over your shoulder and critique, you can basically teach yourself."

This is a one-day intensive course. Although, you can break it into two days to allow more time for everything to digest. Either way, most importantly, TRY everything we cover on YOUR OWN CAMERA as you progress through the course. Don't take tons of notes… JUST TRY IT!

Join Paul in this LIVELY ongoing classroom experience. The flame of passion you currently have for photography will be fanned into a blazing inferno.

Way too much basic camera usage information. I thought this course was specialized and assumed some experience with a camera. It's begun as an entry-level course. What "aperature" means!!!! REALLY????? The "rule of thirds". Come on.

I loved his style and method of teaching, I do think one boost to it could be like having actual work to be turned in such as go out take the 3 best photos you can submit them for others to view and comment on.

Ok...I am only about fifteen percent through with this course and had to write a review. Paul is an EXCELLENT instructor. I am not a novice with a camera but I have not had an SLR since the days of film. I know my f-stops from my shutter speed and can know how they change with each other and determine depth of field.. Paul takes all of this and lays it out so clearly and concisely anyone can understand it. I'm just starting from the top and watching it through to the end as a refresher but I have not yet been bored and impatient to get to the outdoor composition stuff. If you are picking up an SLR this is the course to get you started. A+ all the way.

I have really enjoyed how the instructor explains everything he talks about, the detail he puts into each lesson makes this a top of the line 100 level course. I can really tell how much Paul enjoys photography and teaching which helps me connect and learn. A few concepts in photography were not really clicking for me as to how important they are and how to manipulate them (DoF). With Paul's instruction and demonstration, everything just clicked in place and it is something I will now remember. Thank you Paul, I look forward to more classes with you.

This course was an excellent jumpstart for people who want to learn how to use their camera's manual settings. The course quickly explained important elements of the camera and how to use them to create art in photography. Paul uses excellent examples to illustrate principles, and offers a really simple way to jump in and try out photography without the limits of the auto setting. I would definitely take more courses from Paul!

Artist do not usually want to share the techniques they have worked so long to perfect . Paul enthusiastically offers his vast knowledge to those willing to learn from him !

Paul is an awesome teacher! He uses real life examples to make his presentations relevant, interesting and captivating. He engages his students with leading questions and is empathetic with the issues that all photographers encounter. This course is not lecture-style but rather a workshop with real people. I especially liked the short segments which invite re-visiting when I didn't quite "get it" the first time through. I recommend this course not just for beginners but for experienced photographers who want a warm-up and some inspiration. I'm already looking forward to Paul's next course.

Paul really makes photography concepts easy to understand. This course is packed with great information on everything from how to use a camera, to how to frame a shot, to how to work with lighting. For every new piece of information Paul discusses, he provides real examples of when that was useful to him, and shows photos using that concept. Just this weekend, I went to the Smokies and was able to use what I learned from this course to play around with my camera in manual mode. For comparison, I took some of the same shots with the auto settings on and was amazed at how much better color I was able to capture in manual mode! I absolutely recommend this course for anyone looking to expand their photography knowledge or to pick it up as a new hobby.

This course was comprehensive, entertaining, and very well organized! Paul is not only a fantastic photographer, but a gifted teacher as well. He used creative illustrations and simple explanations to explain very complex concepts. I love how Paul showed lots of examples of his photos and explained the subtleties that make up a good picture. I feel way more confident in my ability to shoot manually on my DSLR now. This was well worth my time and much better than reading a photography book!

Paul does a phenomenal job of making the complicated and logistical world of photography very simple and feasible to beginning and experienced photographers. I've been shooting for seven years and JUST NOW have finally understood the basic ideas behind all the buttons I'm moving around. Thanks Paul!

Technical concepts like f-stops and ISO are explained in new and fresh ways using interesting and easy to understand examples. Understanding what really goes on inside your camera will not only lead to making better photographs but will build your self confidence in being a photographer.

Thank you for such a great, easy to understand, and enlightening course! The segments are just the right length with important information and never boring! I learned a lot of tips and gained a new understanding of things that I had made so difficult, I am not afraid to experiment with all those buttons now. I am reviewing the course again and it is even better the second time around. I plan to take more of your courses as you are an excellent instructor. Thank you!

The enthusiasm that Paul shows for photography is enough to inspire anyone to pick up a camera and give it a go. I have dabbled in photography for many years, but have not had any education since before digital photography was available. This course taught me more than I imagined it would and has renewed my confidence with my camera. I have never been excited about ISO or White Balance and now I can't wait to play with those setting as I head to Europe in the coming weeks. I have sneaking suspicion I will be showing Paul some awesome photos when I return thanks to this class.

It's obvious that Paul both knows what he's doing and loves it. He explains things in non-technical terms for the beginners, but without losing the language of real photography. This course is great for beginning photographers and the more experienced alike. He has great things to say about light, cameras, and exploring. I'd fully recommend it.

As a very novice photographer, I found the online class to be very helpful. I wish I had actually been in the class as I think participating would have been more instructive to me. Paul was excellent and I am looking forward to additional classes with him!
