Why take this course?

Vim is one of the most widely used text editors in the programming industry, not because it's the newest or shiniest, but because it can be found (or can be installed) on every type of system and more importantly it makes it possible to work / code must faster then you would otherwise.

Why doesn't everyone use Vim if it's so great? Well it does not have a standard GUI which means all the tools it provides must be memorized. People often think this is too much to learn at first and never try, but with this course, Jason Elbourne shows you the basic necessities to get up and running with Vim. The course won't take up to much of your time. They will make your day to day coding much more productive, saving you time.

Topics include:

  • Entering and leaving vi
  • Understanding the Command, Insert, and Colon modes
  • Moving around in files
  • Editing text
  • Moving content with delete, yank, and put
  • Searching with regular expressions
  • Customizing vi
  • Filtering text through shell commands

This was a great start for a beginner vim user. Enough to get you going, but not overwhelming. Messed up text files (beyond what is included in vimtutor) to practice on would have been the only I would have liked that wasn't included.

Excellent course that it made vim tutor so easy to follow, I knew vim tutor was there but never completed before, but with this course, I follow along fine and happy that I took this course. I discovered lots of new techniques and hope to practice and apply at my work. Thank you, Sunil

It's a very good introduction ti using VIM. I'm now confident to use and navigate in VIM - but not sure I could use it in workplace just yet. Just need to practice some more.

while talking it would be great to see some very basic recorded demo of how each mode looks, to get a visual idea of what he is talking - this is only regarding the intro videos

I had always wanted to learn VIM and with this course I finally feel I know it well enough to actually use it. I develop in .net Visual Studio for work and I have added a VIM extension so I can use Vim commands in Visual Studio. Fantastic, the more I use it the more I like it. Took one star off because I would like to see a download with the commands we learned instead of having to watch a video again. I would also love to see more information on customizing VIM and creating macros etc.. perhaps in an advanced class?

This course covers the basics of vim taking the student through vimtutor and beyond with three additional sections covering window manipulation, file explorer, commenting code and indenting. Having started the course knowing nothing of vim, I now have sufficient command of basic text manipulation, file and directory creation and manipulation to begin coding my projects using vim.

The course helps me to get forward. Much more than doing the vim tutor by myself. It's great to hear the examples and see the pressed keys at the same time.

Although I used to do some basic editing on Solaris systems using Vi, I must admit to always avoiding using Vim due to its seemingly cryptic command structure and have 'cheated' by using other graphical-based text editors when working in Linux. Now starting to work on embedded systems with stripped-down versions of Linux I realise it's best to learn the near universal editor included in most distros. Thanks to Jason for providing this non-intimidating 'hand-holding' course. Now just got to stop myself slipping back into my old ways!

Although Jason spends most of his time walking you through vimtutor where this course really comes through is in the extra lessons he created. I wish he had more of his own content rather than using mostly vimtutor. All in all though, a good thorough introduction to using Vim and Jason does a great job of that!

When I first realized that the initial part of the course is based on the vimtutor, I wasn't too sure whether buying this course was a good idea. After a lesson or two, my initial suspicion was proven to be wrong. Walking through the initial chapter with the comments of an experienced instructor and programmer does make a difference and I learned a lot here. The course, however, stretches far beyond the content of vimtutor and provides more valuable techniques for daily text editing and programming in vim. The tutor, Jason Elbourne, obviously has a large experience in teaching. His calm voice is easy to understand for a non-native speaker like me and the lessons are well prepared. I found the way in which the material is presented highly motivating. In summary, this beginners course on vim was a great pleasure and I can highly recommend it.

This was a very informative and helpful video for learning VIM. I use Linux and after much frustration with IDEs I recently decided to ditch them all and turned to vim for help, which led me here. Go for it.

At first blush it seems like Jason is just going through the vimtutor you can do yourself. That's partially true, but it's immensely helpful to hear and see someone walking through each step with you. There are a few sections at the end not included in vimtutor and they are all helpful for learning how to quickly navigate around files. I had never used Vim before this course and now I feel it's a serious contender for me editor-of-choice.
