Description

Even if you think you can't draw, don't have the time or talent - with our help you CAN DRAW.

This course focusses on practicing the fundamental concepts, but in a fun creative way. We'll draw characters, environments, objects, weapons, spaceships, game scenes and lots more.

You'll be encouraged to draw without trying to be perfect. Learning to draw concept art is more about conveying your idea than it is about winning art awards!

You can follow along with this course even if you don't have a fancy graphics tablet. Every lecture is suitable for people with paper-and-pencil, as well as those folks who have a digital drawing set up.

So what topics will we cover?

  • We’ll start with learning the basic fundamentals of Stroke, Shape, Size and Shade. Lot's of practice creating quirky video game objects such as weapons, cars, castles and more.

  • Then, while still learning the fundamentals, we'll have some fun creating characters, learning dimensions, posing and more.

  • Then on 3D SHAPES to build-up an isometric drawing, your first foray into the third dimension.

  • We’ll teach you one and two point perspective, along with saturation techniques to give a sense of DEPTH.

  • Building on what we’ve learnt, we practice flowing shapes into one-another to create natural looking FORM.

  • Along the way you’ll learn ADVANCED techniques including pose, shading, lighting, stroke thickness and more.

Each step of the way you'll be asked to use your creativity to draw things which are interesting to you, not just trying to replicate exactly what the instructor is drawing.

All with our secret sauce of regular challenges, and exquisitely paced learning.

At GameDev tv we’ve helped nearly 1m people get started in game development. With us you’ll be supported by a vibrant community of 1000s of other students, as well as a dedicated teaching assistant to help you.

I really like GameDev TV and the work they do teaching game design for those of us without an art or game programming degree. they do a great job teaching in all 4 of their courses, including this one, I have taken and I want to thank them a lot for the effort. Keep on educating.

It is a perfect match. Grant is very methodical and approaches every subject from a gamified perspective. My drawing has improved and am very grateful for the course he created. Thank you

the negative comments are right. The introducer explains little and gives little theory, to compensate for this he had the brilliant idea of putting the challenges. I reproduce without understanding what I'm drawing. I wish the trainer had taken the time to explain it properly. I sent an email to request a second course on drawing for games but unfortunately his system works on the fact that you have to make a course idea and have enough votes from the community for the introducer to react. (what I finally gave up in view of the popularity of unity courses, blender, unreal...) the one-star comment from "Jorge de Jesús Martínez E" is true! I have the impression that the Instructor knows a lot of things but hasn't been able to put them into practice due to lack of time and priority. I wish the introducer had been able to work regularly on paper and in pencil, rather than working more often on digital painting. There's a lot more to say, but I can't dwell on it. But you should know, Mr. Grant Abbitt, that you may be good in 3d, but in 2d it remains to be discussed. Kind regards. SilverC

Very in depth and easy to understand. I have followed some of Grant's Blender tutorials on YouTube and loved his teaching style, so I decided to give this course a go. I'm delighted that I did! I started with absolutely no 2D art ability, but I have definitely gained some useful skills and the confidence to develop them further, thanks Grant!

I already Like grants teaching style from the blender courses that I have taken. I could not draw at the beginning, but now my children get excited about the drawings I do for them, which is a good start.

This course is very complete, with a lot of great techniques. I alwais says "i draw like a monkey with a pencil" but now i can start to learn drawing and using this to make my own concept art for my 3d game objects. Thanks Grant

I have completed the course and I have to say that Grant Abbitt is a very good teacher. He teaches you the basics of drawing using practical and interesting examples and exercises. It took me a month to complete the course and I must say that I am very satisfied with the results obtained. Obviously you need to dedicate at least 10-15 minutes every day. I believe I will come back often to the various course topics for monthly challenges and improve each topic covered. For sure I will continue my journey to learn how to develop games with GameDev.tv and I hope that more courses on drawing and something on digital painting will be created in the future. I highly recommend this course for everyone.

Even if you don't want to work in video games but you absolutely want to learn to draw, this is the course you NEED. Quick progress and results. A course well structured enough that you can go straight to what interests you and then discover everything else.

Pierwszy raz w życiu ktoś mi wreszcie powiedział, że mogę użyć zwykłego papieru toaletowego do rozcierania cieni i nie mogę uwierzyć jaka piękna kulka mi wyszła (jak na mnie :D)

Grant Abbitt (sp last name?) is a gift from God Almighty. I have always learned much from him and he teaches clearly, at a good pace to follow.

A very enjoyable course from Grant - this covers everything you need to know to put together concept art and build upon those skills in to more detailed work.

There were some great start tips, particularly around holding the pencil. The demonstration was maybe a little rushed, but being online I was able to just rewatch it so more an inconvenience than a problem.
