Varnams are integral to Karnatic music and are typically composed in rhythmic cycles known as talas, with Adi Tala (adlibbed to 8 beats, original is 6 or 10) and Ata Tala (14 beats) being the most common. The varnam structure includes Pallavi (a compositional form that serves as the main theme of the kriti), Anupallavi (a variation of the pallavi), Muktaayi Swara Sahitya (a composition in syllables without musical notes, used mostly in teaching the rhythm and melody), Charanam (lyrics with musical notes), and sometimes Chitta Swara or Ettugadda Swaram (a composition sung in syllables that correspond to the Charanam swaras). Anubandham (an optional concluding section) may also be present.
Famous Varnams in Adi Tala include "Sami Ninne" by Karur Devudu Iyer, "Ninnukori" by Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar, "Evvari Boddhanai" by Patnam Subramania Iyer, and "Era Naapai" by the same composer. In Ata Tala, some of the well-known varnams are "Viribbonnavariga" by Thyagaraja, "Jaganmohini" by Muthuswami Dikshitar, and "Ramanatoye Ramara" by Syama Sastri.
Each Varnam is a gem in the treasure trove of Karnatic music, showcasing the intricacies of rhythm, melody, and poetic expression. The varnam serves as an excellent tool for learning the fundamentals of rhythm through solkattu (a system of percussion-based rhythmic notation) and vocal technique through the Muktaayi Swara Sahitya. It also provides a platform for dancers to express the nuances of Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form of India.
