What you will learn

Identify differences among classic Conversion, Pain and Somatoform disorders.

Learn methods for relieving clients with psychosocial discomfort.

Understand how to diagnose and treat Illness Anxiety Problems

Separating clients who fake illnesses (malingerers) from those who do not

Why take this course?

Several health problems are actually due to underlying psychological issues that need attention. Learn more about Conversion Problems, Primary Pain Disorders (PPD) and Briquette's Syndrome. For instance, some people avoid tackling problems in their relationships by developing dramatic physical symptoms such as waking up paralyzed or blind (known as Conversion). For example, someone who is having problems with a co-worker might wake up one day with an incapacity to move their legs.

Others who neglect their underlying psychological needs may find that it becomes expressed as either chronic or recurring physical pain in certain parts of their body (PPD). A woman who is unhappy in her marriage might find that pains develop in her lower back around the time that her partner is due home from work.

Another classic pattern (Briquette's Syndrome) takes the form of chronic physical discomfort in four areas of the body (the gastrointestinal tract, in their sexual organs, or neurological and overall). All four symptoms will occur at one time, making the individual feel overwhelmed by their pain symptoms.

However, once the psychological stressors are addressed and resolved (for instance, changing the way a relationship works), the physical manifestations get resolved. In other words, after therapy for the psychological issue the illness vanishes.

Master the basics of Illness Anxiety Disorders (what used to be called Hypochondria) and how to treat them. Understand the psychological motives of people who fake an illness for either internal (attention from others) or external (making money) gains. Understand how to use the best methods for turning these problems on their head and taking back your health.

It would be better if the introduction would tell more what it's all about. It seems like some things are getting explained AND how to overcome them. But it's basically just explanations of what is what. And another one for example with the hypnosis session in there is just being shown... but what was the outcome? Did it help? I don't know.

These video lectures have all been very informative. Dr. Stohs does a great job of explaining in detail about somatic disorder, symptoms that arise from it, and treatments. I honestly thought it was really cool that she even included a demonstration of hypnotherapy so I could learn what a real hypnotherapy would consist of. I enjoyed watching these video lectures!

Dr. Stohs did a great job of describing the symptoms. I enjoyed the hypnotherapy experience because it was engaging and a good example of how it takes place in real life. Overall, I liked that this course helps to to differentiate between medical and psychological problems because as mentioned, many people fake illnesses for external gain.

Dr. Stohs is very educated and informative about the subject regarding somatic symptoms disoder. She explained it in a very clear and concise manner that made it easy for me to follow. I especially like that she added case studies about conversion disorders and somatization because it demonstrates to the audience that this can actually happen in real life. It shows strong validity in the topic she is trying to convey. It was enlightening and impressive to see Dr. Stohs perform the hypnotic therapy on a client who is trying to quit smoking because I like to see the therapies being applied rather than just hearing about them.

Not only did I find the information so far to be clear and concise, but I also enjoyed the effort to make an online course interactive with the breathing exercise. It was a really engaging tool used by the professor. So far i'm really loving this topic! Super interesting.

Dr. Stohs is a great professor! I loved how I was able to see real-life hypnosis take place. It was incredible to see how Debby seemed to be extremely relaxed during the hypnosis. Also, the real-life examples mentioned in the video helped me get a better idea of how therapies are used. Overall, all of the examples in the lecture applied to the real world. Great job with the in-depth explanations! Best, Graciela R.

I enjoyed Dr. J's organized, interesting, and engaging course. She provided a large amount of useful information in short, easy to follow lectures. It was particularly helpful that she included case exercises in the lecture- this reinforced my understanding of the material and provided an opportunity to apply the information I had just learned. Also helpful was that Dr. J included a "review questions" document with answers along with the lectures.

Dr. Stohs lecture on Somatoforms provides an in-depth, yet succinct review of the characteristics, explanations and treatments related to disorders featuring somatic symptoms. I especially appreciated the case study examples that linked the clinical description to the correct label and then explained the most effective treatments for the client.

The descriptions of the symptoms are clear and concise. Dr. Stohs uses real life examples to describe individuals that have these disorders. She branches further than what we have read in our course workbook,

The course was very clear and comprehensible. The exercises and examples applied to each disorder made the disorders themselves distinguishable and easy to understand. The video on hypnotherapy was very insightful and interesting to watch. This course will help me study, review and understand the topics also being taught in my Psychology 341 course.

Explains material in depth. I really like the examples given because they make the subject more understandable. The subject itself is very interesting. This will also help me better understand one of the current chapters in class.
