Introduction to Pen and Ink Sketching

This course was too advanced for me. The use of watercolours and coloured inks look like fun, but I am too much of a nervous beginner to try that yet. I still need step by step instructions to build my confidence with more basic pen and ink techniques and would have liked some more projects like the waterfall one.

Shirish makes it look simple! He also helps you to relax and not worry if your drawing isn't perfect or needs some corrections.

Instructor is wonderful to listen to. He has so much knowledge of drawing and pen and ink....wish I could have him sitting right next to me while I work!

Instruction is concise and clear. I like the beginning explaining what an artist should see with texture, shadows and lines.

I really like this tutorial and I'm looking forward to apply all techniques i learnd here. This tutorial was important to open my eyes and learn how to see the draw.

Nice short sweet course. Please make painting videos 3times faster instead of 5 times faster. Observation of painting certain textures, and techniques become more clear. Like shading techniques using pen, add a small capsule for shading techniques using color. Enjoyed the course.

I felt that it was pretty basic. Clearly the instructor loves the subject but there were not enough exercises. For example, a blank pic could be provided for stippling, crosshatching practice.

This was great fun. It had a good pace, with clear instructions. Really enjoyed the example sketches at the end and the incorporation of coloured inks and watercolours. That was the part I wanted to learn most! Thanks Shirish! Great job!

The instructor gave very clear explanations of his method. His art work was very impressive. I do feel, however, he could have been more clear bout some of the details of his technique. In doing the painting of the house, for example, he demonstrates using a toothbrush for texture and does not describe what he was applying: water, ink, paint, or something else.

Great course and the step by step waterfall sketch was excellent. I would love to see a longer course with more step by step demonstrations and maybe a step by step of the course covering picture.

I joined this course because I wanted to learn sketching with basic ink/ballpens. My expectation was that this course will teach me step by step on how to sketch. I heard techniques such as hatching/stripling and random. Beyond that I did not learn how to sketch. How do I get proportions? How do I see the lines and shapes that the artist talks about? How do I get depth? I think this course just tells you what pen and ink sketching is. But that is not why anyone would want to join a course for.

Pen and ink have always fascinated me. Its many textures, shapes, shades, nuances, and sharpness continue to amaze me, especially when I realize that I am looking at black marks on white surfaces. Mr. Deshpande capably unlocks the magic of the techniques behind the astonishing artwork of the sketching world. In his course, he begins at the beginning assuring us that all a person really needs is a simple pen and paper. From this most humble of starts, he then adds strategies of techniques (all most simple in and of themselves to do!), and layers them into a project- a delightful and enchanting waterfall scene that I was able to complete with some good success. He expands on these basic tools and introduces the use of color masterfully demonstrated in his final temple project, which becomes the perfect application of all three of his guiding principles he teaches in his course as well as specific use of his two unbreakable rules for this media. Because I am from the United States, I found Mr. Deshpande to have a mesmerizing accent which added a delectable spice to his energetic, encouraging, and warm delivery of his lessons. He has promised us more. My hope is that he will actually produce a series of lessons to show us how to do the boat project that is on the cover of this course.

This lesson was good at least a person can pick up a thing or two on hues and shading. I would say it was short but to the point.

I really enjoyed this and learned more than I thought I would. I loved learning about my 'artist eye' and looking for shapes, shadows and textures, that was very useful insight. I also learned a lot about how to use a brush and this will help me more with my digital sketching than I was expecting. The step-by-step demos were great also as it made it seem like anybody, including me, could sketch well!

Loved this course. It really opened my eyes to the possiblities of pen an ink. The addition of watercolor gives unlimited possibilities.
