What you will learn

By the end of this course, you will have learned the user interface, understand 3D Coat's terminology, including what voxels are, and be able to move between the major functions of the program.

Why take this course?

The purpose of this course is to introduce you to a magnificent multi-purpose 3D modeling tool, called 3D Coat (I cover this using version 4.0.04B). With this program, you can sculpt hard and organic surface creations using Voxels, retopologize your sculptures, UV unwrap them, paint directly on them (while baking high-poly details onto lower poly meshes, and export in a number of formats). This course includes almost 4 hours of instruction and is aimed at beginners to advanced 3D hobbyists and professionals who want to get familiar with 3D Coat for the first time. Students will receive custom user interface themes created by the instructor, as a bonus.

This is a good overview of 3D Coat and it's features, covering the application's strengths and weakness. It pairs well with Alienminefield's youtube tutorial as well. However, this course covers a wider range of subjects and goes slightly more in depth in covering 3D Coat's tools and functions.

Rob teaches like I do, so really for me 5 stars personally. One thing that he does as do I is that he tends to just go a hair in over explaining. I don't hold this against him, as like I stated, I do it also. Its something that he should work on as do I. I tend to practice what I am going to say in the lessons and them record them, and or record them about 3 times so I can use the most polished one. Good introduction though, and I like 3D Coat over Z Brush also.

I found myself wishing the instructor would try working from a script. The point of working from a script is that it makes you work *on* a script. The coherence and brevity of a presentation generally improve if you think hard about what you're going to say or show before you say or show it. Very few of us are any damned good at winging it through even mildly complicated topics.

Few practical examples, so we get a lot of content that ends in oblivion. I believe the course name should be changed from Introduction to 3D Coat for 3D Coat Presentation. There is no introduction to the program but its demonstration, its strengths, failures and general functioning. For those who do not know the program is a great way to meet, but for those who already know and want to learn how to use (my case) helps very little.

Confusing, erratic and unclear. YouTube videos, like AlienMinefield are much more clear and objective. A total waste of time!

It felt like the instructor was conducting the course without an outline and doing it from his head. Still it was informative but he tended to bounce around on various subjects rather than focusing on one issue or subject at a time.

The course delivers exactly what it promised. An introduction. Not every nook and cranny is handled but most important things are talked about. Do not expect specific examples or a real project where you get a finished model at the end. Think of it as a narrated manual for basic functions. That said, it felt it was still a bit short on showing how many of the functions actually work "live". Also the paint section was awfully short, the retopo section too brief as well. The video quality is a but blurry and the sound not exactly great but good enough to follow. TLDR: Good overview with some shortcomings, money was spent well.

presenter is easy to understand and progresses through the thoughts and ideas in a linear fashion that makes everything easy to digest.

Very informative, giving decent depth for an intro course into a piece of software with so many options and quirks. Clear, precise, matches with what is shown on the screen. I hope this instructor makes more of the in-depth courses for all components of this software. It could use a bit more on UVs even in the intro course, but is certainly making me more aware of the vast capabilities of this software. I would certainly sign up for another course from Robert Alvord.

I took this course because I was a complete beginner to 3D Coat. It gives a great overview of the various functions but started to lose me when it got to section 4 and beyond mainly because the concepts became more advanced. Nevertheless as I progress in 3D Coat I will be able to refer back to Robert's lessons with a greater understanding. There's a lot of gold experience in this course.

If you are completely new to 3D Coat, then this is a good course for you. Much of the information can be found online and on YouTube for free, but only here can you find it in one place. If you are looking for this to replace the software manual, this isn't it. The introduction style in which Robert uses, is somewhat more like a software demo, because he only briefly touches on key aspects of the software. It is a very casual look at 3D coat. I'm not new to 3D Coat, so I found it to be more like a refresher, especially when it comes to workflow.

Having become used to several other 3d Packages, 3D-Coat presented a challenge in terms of workflow. It's "Rooms" and methods were very alien to me and had initially turned me off from using it. However, this course helped me overcome my initial fears and helped me discover what is undoubtedly a VERY powerful tool for game artists. The pace is steady and covers everything you need to know to start producing models, although a few directed exercises would have been welcome. My only real criticism is that the sound only comes from the left channel, which makes using headphones a little jarring. After taking this course I will most definitely be taking the follow-up by the same author.

Worth the price, nice style of teaching. Not so beginner, cover enough information for experience 3D artist to make them find a way to understand UI and workflow of 3D-Coat (finally!) -1 star for sound that still has noise and only has 1 channel (Mono) of my speaker. (Should fix it)

This course is a quick introduction to the application and not a fully explorative (know everything about everything) type course. He really doesn't go into much detail about the various tools, but rather gives a fast once over of the high points. I would have liked to have seen more about the various brushes and why one would choose one over another; more description of the different types of sculpting possible; there wasn't much about importing reference images; as well as a lot more coverage of the paint room. Overall a good introduction, but rather thin on real life application.
